Incorrect safe area guidelines

PostFri Feb 13, 2015 12:59 pm

hi,

just like to point out that the safe area guidelines are incorrect (at least in 11.1.4). Safe action/title are *nowhere near* the 10%/20% stated in the manual.

please fix. And while you are at it, there's no safe area option for 2.39 and 2.40, incorrect or otherwise. Also, please add custom ratios so I can program in e.g. the 1605x903 safe title area for cinema screens, (relative to 1.77 HD)

thanks,

Incorrect safe area guidelines

They're not incorrect. They follow the newer spec from SMPTE ST 2046-1, which is 90% and 93%. It reflects a more realistic safe action for newer TV displays. Networks are slowly switching to it, but many haven't updated and still ask for 90%/80%.

It would be nice, however, to be able to toggle over to 90%/80% for older specs, or customize your own lines as a reticle generator. Some networks make up their own hybrid safe action, so it would be nice to be able to match. And the manual should be updated, if it hasn't been already.

well that's the first I've heard of it (I'm from UK if that means anything), and as long as anyone is asking for 80/90%, we'll need those as an option.

Also there's no option for 14:9 (1.55:1), making this feature even more redundant at present.

Yes, we switched to 90/93% few year back.

However when I grade for theatrical, I still use the 90/80%... too much cropping in the tethers...

Fact is that most delivery specs I see still ask for 90/80% safety margins.

It was a bit presumptuous for Resolve to jump to a new system without giving users the option or at least noting the change in documentation (the manual still says 80% for title safety).

What I do not understand is why BM does not give the option (like other system) to put those two numbers in the GUI.

If you have a 2.35 show and you want to protest for a 16/9 extraction, you will need something like 60% of safe area within the 2.35. Better leave those option open.

as for the blanking: if you have a common-top shooting (like the movie I just finished) you're out of luck...
