DaVinchi Resolve 12 update

PostMon Apr 13, 2015 4:30 pm

Hello,

I've noticed that DaVinchi Resolve 12 is coming what is great. But the question is how can I update to DaVinchi Resolve 12 from 11 if I use licence dongle from Ursa 4K, which I've bought about 2 weeks ago.

What about support for DNxHR in QuickTime files? This is a huge deal — given Apple's restrictive ProRes licensing, DNxHR seems like the best bet for a cross platform compressed master format, and far more apps can read QT-wrapped files than MXFs.

REALLY dissapointed R12 requires Yosemite. Yosemite is still an issue with other apps and of course supports fewer GPUs.

This doesn't make sense. If it is needed for a particular feature/api then disable that for Mountain Lion and Mavericks users.

It's a Pro app so support Pro users.

Own the full version and am not happy!

Got to wonder how you'd react if they actually required you to pay for this update...

+1 there for ProRes on Windows.
No idea why BMD is not incorporating the same.
Even the latest RedCineX just included writing to ProRes on Windows a possibility.

The disadvantage of not being able to write out ProRes, in my opinion, is one of the biggest drawbacks of being on the Windows platform. Else we are having the most amazing performance off our custom built workstations that the new top of the line MacPro's cant even come close to for both price and performance.

Come on BMD, you know its possible.
Please enable this feature at the earliest with the release of 12.

Media Composer cannot encode ProRes either on Win based systems. Maybe it has something to do with the fact that both Resolve (especially 12) and Media Composer compete with FCPx? I'm just guessing here, but I would not be surprised if this was the case in order to give OS X based systems the preference.

That's true - there's also no ProRes encoder for Linux but Linux Resolve writes ProRes files. Resolve doesn't actually use QuickTime components (hence its ability to read/write DNxHD without the Avid codec installed) - all of Resolve's QT functionality comes from .dlls included with the software (i.e. Blackmagic decides/develops what formats Resolve can use).

The dongle is not version specific, and the upgrade to Resolve 12 is free. Rohit Gupta says in a post above that owners of previous full versions of Resolve will be able to use the dongle with Resolve 12.

I would pay for a windows option with ProRes. and not that FFmpeg bs like on linux. I've had clients complain about that. I would love nothing more than to dump this mac for a wndows machine but the lack of pro res gives me no choice.

You could always run Resolve completely on Windows, then use a Mac machine off to the side just for rendering projects. There is way to hand off renders to other computers, according to the press release:

DaVinci Resolve 12 also now supports remote rendering so customers working in larger facilities can distribute rendering jobs to other Resolve systems that are on the same shared database and shared storage.

I spent some time playing with Resolve 12 yesterday morning while the BMD booth was somewhat uncrowded. It's amazing. Easily BMD's best new product. We're talking Scratch levels of performance with a tracker that rivals Mocha Pro's planar tracker (no joke). I can guarantee that I will never for any project where I get to choose edit in Premiere again after seeing that.

Interesting idea...Oh wait, that sounds a lot like the Kompressor running off a Linux Baselight. Which was not the most stable setup. plus I'd like to get away from Mac completely. I'm done complaining, would just love, like many others, to be able to render prores files in a windows machine one day.

Rakesh:
When you talk about levels of performance, were you referring to real-time playback? that's one issue we have using Resolve for an editor - sluggish playback/response of CinemaDNG.

Sigh,
I was really hoping to see ProRes support in Release 12 for PC. The rest of it looks great, but the ProRes output problem means I have to keep offloading to the slower OSX machines, which is frustrating.

Apple hasnt tied down the Windows ProRes encoder to only Apple devices btw.
DVS Clipster has had it for a while (although I think they might have had some FFMpeg stuff going on).
Less than a year or so ago, Assimilate announced their support for native encoding of ProRes on Windows machines.
RedCineX announced their support for it at NAB this year.

Its a total bummer than BMD aren't on the same page.
This is the only major drawback of using Resolve on Windows right now.
As stated earlier, the software just rips through everything we throw at it on our current custom config Windows machine.

Re: DaVinchi Resolve 12 update

It seems unlikely BMD wouldn't support ProRes on Windows if they could. Apple appears to approve ProRes licensees on a case-by-case basis, so we can't really say "Well, others are doing this so BMD could as well."

My guess is that Apple sees allowing ProRes in REDCINE-X on Windows as something that encourages Mac use, because it makes it easier to get R3D footage into a Mac-friendly format. They've also seemed to be willing to license ProRes for Windows/Linux software that's so expensive it's not really in competition with mainstream Mac-based software — this includes the Linux version of Resolve itself. But I think Apple is of the opinion that most Windows Resolve users, in contrast, really could and should be using Macs, and wants to give them a good reason to do so. That just doesn't quite work out that way for every user's requirements, which is leading to a lot of frustration.

Maybe Apple will start to open up a bit more with ProRes now that DNxHR and OpenEXR 2.2 DWA are poised to start giving it some real competition in the 'compressed master' codec space.

Our recommendation is to use Windows 8.1 and we test on 8.1, but existing systems running Windows 7 Pro with service pack 1 should continue to work at this point of time.

For Mac OS, Yosemite is required for a number of features.

I think a lot of Windows7 users will skip Windows8 and will wait for Windows 10 after it's service pack 1 update has been released, so it's good to know I'm not having to spend on an upgrade twice on the operating system of things just to get Davinci Resolve to work
