You are right, that doesn't work all times and it can be slower then we wish but combined with some of the new feature of resolve 12 it saved my day.
In your common scenario clips you want to exclude are already grouped ?
I often use (waste) my groups to apply a "timeline grade " which can be bypassed ungrouping shots. This behaviour has changed my grading routine.
I first create my groups and grade the whole film, then collapse group grades to clip level, then assign all the shots to a new group and apply lut/node if needed to the new macro group, then ungroup shots I want to exclude.
It works but it's not optimal.
I can understand the Timeline mode works, of course, on the whole timeline but in this way it's almost useless and reduntant, in fact if we want to apply lut to everything we can use output lut in project settings. I think what we need in resolve is a track grade level ( moving clips to a certain video track to include or exclude them) or a "master grade" ( with option to exclude some clips) replacing the " timeline".
Going back to the OP question, cutting and pasting grade from timeline to post group should give the exact same result. Timeline grade is coming right after post group so as long as the grade is the same ( you must delete timeline grading though). Be sure you haven't also the same grade applied by mistake to pre group.
