Any ideas? Quicktime player plays back the footage with no problems.

I don't think you can output prores in windows

Shouldn't be a problem with the quicktime codec onboard?

Like I said, quicktime player outputs it just fine.

What GPU do you have? Do you get any errors or warning when you start Resolve?

I actually launched it again and it gave me the 'gpu has ran out of memory' dialogue box as soon as I went into the video folder.

Well then, I guess this machine won't be able to do *anything* with the BMCC footage. It IS a rather old AMD GPU.

No, I wasn't planning to edit my work on it, simply wanted to play around with a simple grade (just bought the BMCC 2.5k). Just didn't expect it to give out this sort of weird splitter garbling. I hoped it would merely be a slowdown.

P.S. Can't be happy enough with the ungraded footage though. Having previously shot with Canon DSLRs and FS-100 (latter of which I used to love), I can't believe I am getting this kind of creamy, organic image out of the box without wrestling with the in-camera settings.

Here's a sample (horrible youtube macroblocking notwithstanding):

Yep, it is the offender on the right.

If it's Windows, try a test with DNxHD 175, and I bet it'll be just as good as ProRes 422. If it's BMC footage, you could try DNxHD 350 (444) and see how well it does. Always do tests before starting a project like this, just with a minute or so of material, to make sure the machine is up to the job.

Thanks for the input. Greatly appreciated.

Not sure I understood you correctly, but am I missing something? BMCC 2.5 shoots DNxHD 350 now? Or is it good ol' 175 still?

And no worries, it is not a project. I am still messing around while I am waiting for my support gear to arrive, trying the hardware out in different lighting situations, therefore you can consider it a test. So far, so good.

P.S. I wonder if I should consider the hackintosh route.

Export DNxHD. Exporting ProRes from Windows in Resolve is currently not doable.

BMCC material will work with Resolve provided you have fast hardware, fast storage, and beefy GPUs.

Nope, even having the Quicktime codec installed doesn't allow you to output ProRes in Windows. You have to have specific programs that are licensed to get official ProRes encoding in Windows. Playing back the file is not the same as encoding into the file.

One option I use a lot with Resolve on Win 7 is to output to an Image Sequence Master file then cut my deliverables from it. ClipToolz 'Convert' v2.xx makes one of the best ProRes or DNxHD transcodes from DPX or Tiff Image sequences.

Or just roll your own with ffmpeg:

ffmpeg -i <video_filename.xxx> -vcodec prores_ks -pix_fmt yuva444p10le -profile:v 4444 -qscale:v 1 ffmpeg_ProRes_4444.mov

Will get you a nice ProRes 4444 for example.

I am starting to suspect I was misunderstood, so correct me if I am wrong and everything said above still stands.
I have shot the footage in Prores on a BMCC. When I have tried to place the footage into the media pool, it came up as a garbled mess. So am I correct in assuming that windows version of resolve is not going to with prores files correctly in any shape or form?

You should be able to read them.. i was under the understanding that you cannot export them. ..

Somebody on a pc should chime in

Yeah, I figured 'output' was no the most correct word to use, my bad
Yeah, I was able to send a sample over to my old man, his Mac Pro bucket has no problem with handling it in Resolve. Very strange.

The culprit must be the insufficient gpu ram.

I shoot native ProRes HQ @ 185-200 Mbps and can easily play, edit and grade in Resolve on a win 7 i7 PC with only a Quadro K600 GPU which has 1GB RAM on board. Most likely, you have a bottleneck somewhere. You will need a fast disk drive - ideally minimum 7200 RPM or better still, an SSD

Mine is 7200 RPM, I still believe it is the GPU. Although really strange that shortage of ram can cause this kind of splitter effect.
