RCM = Video look?

PostTue Sep 08, 2015 3:46 pm

Hi to all,

I've identified a potential flaw with R12 Resolve Color Management.

I loaded a Alex XT shot in PR444 in Log-c to test the function. My first reaction was: this looks a little bit "video-like".

I went thru the clip and at one point the lady is back lit with full sun in the sky. It was clear at that moment that the "color-science" behind RCM is not aesthetically pleasing. The highlights clipped really hard and the sky was totally blown out. I tried lowering down the gain and gamma... It was next to impossible to get a nice result. The log-c original has most the detail and a nice and pleasing roundness to the highlights. This was all gone in RCM.

I tried with ACES and a film LUT and both had WAY more detail and we're both much better looking than RCM.

I've included some stills.

Thanks!

In: log-c
Timeline: tried 709 2.4 and logc
BTW: when in logc in timeline the "feeling" is not like I'm used to...
Output: 709 2.4

R12 beta 4

Thanks

PR4444 so by default they should be in Data range. You are reffering to the clip attributes... correct?
