Return audio to video w/ deleted audio on timeline?

PostThu Sep 10, 2015 7:23 pm

Is there a way to bring back the audio to a video clip on the timeline that may have had the audio deleted? For instance, if I didn't think I needed the audio for something and so deleted it. But then realize I need the audio back (or vice-versa with the video). It would be cool to be able to click on a clip and select "return audio to timeline" or "replace with clip from media pool" or something like that.

Otherwise, I need to locate the clip in the media pool and then redo the edit, with the video attached.

Just a thought.

This would be a cool feature in any NLE. What I do is go to the beginning of the clip, hit F to match frame, and take the audio from there.

One good working practice: instead of deleting audio, just put any audio you're thinking about deleting on a specific track, then deselect the track. That way, if you ever change your mind, you just turn the track back on and it's there.

Select the audio part of the clip and hit D. This will disable just the audio for the clip. Pressing D again turns it back on. Works for video or titles too. Very handy.

I too would like this. There are workarounds but they're a few clicks not the right click and select.

This is a good practice for any NLE. Along with muting or disabling these clips. This makes it obvious to the audio team that these are probably unwanted clips but they are there if needed (so no match framing necessary down the line).

I came here looking for the answer, but I think I just figured it out.

Place the scrub bar over the clip that you want in the timeline. "Clip" menu>"match frame to source clip", then just grab the audio icon from the source window and down into the timeline. It gets complicated with multicam clips... but you could potentially flatten it and go from there.

I came here with precisely this question. Can confirm that this works. For anyone looking for a little more detail, I had made two edits to the mixed audio, deleting some gaps (live concert footage). Apparently I forgot how difficult it would be to sync the video clip with the audio once I had deleted the native audio from the video clip.

I had the video clip split and the cursor on the split. I hit "F" and the In point in the clip bin set itself to that frame. Then I deleted the video and drug the video with audio back from the clip bin. It linked up perfectly, and made syncing so much easier. Then I just muted the audio and left it in place.

Thanks David, from the future, for your help!

I'd love this. I started editing with the camera audio, got a week later the real audio, synced to clips but the timeline has still only the camera audio.

I do this frequently but slightly differently.
When I’m anywhere in the clip I do:
Mark in and Out around Clip (what’s it really called?)
Match Frame
Overwrite

Gets me a new copy of the clip with audio restored. Video and audio linked. I have it bound to a macro in Keyboard Maestro. I can hit it repeatedly and it will march down the timeline restoring audio.

Just for simplification by using keyboard shortcuts, the process would be placing the scrub bar in the beginning of the clip that you want in the timeline, then hit F, and then F10. It could turn into a quite automated process for a single track at least.
