NVIDIA 580 or 680 ?

PostWed Jan 09, 2013 1:44 pm

Hi
I would like to build an MacPro to work esclusisvly with video software (FCPX and DaVinci Resolve).
Could you suggest me the best Video Component hardware to buy?

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 580 with 3072 MB GGDR5 SDRAM
or
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680 with 4096 MB GDDR5 SDRAM

Thank you in advance. Best regards.

Generally the 580 performs better in CUDA apps.
The 680 is very fast though and works native with 10.8.3 (soon to be released).
If you go 580 you will likely have to use some hack tools to get it working but it is not difficult.

Let me know what you decide and if you need help setting it up.

Could you shed some light on what to use for CUDA and Resolve in a MacPro 5,1? I'm trying to find a solution that does not involve an expander chassis.

After reading the "Configuration Guide" my understanding is the 570 2.5 Mb worked well this way. It's no longer available.

I've currently got an ATI 5870. Can I use it for GUI along with a 580 for CUDA? I've heard you can down-clock the 580 which will lower it's power consumption? I have no idea how this is done though.

Any information would be helpful.
