Laptop Disk Advice - Will another External HDD Help?

Greetings -

I have, or at least I believed I had, a powerful laptop.

Specs:
CPU: i7 2.8 GHz Processor
GPU: GTX870M
MEM: 16GB RAM
Running Windows 8.1
250GB SSD for OS and Programs
1TB HDD (internal) for Files

All of my media and cache are stored on (internal) HDD.
I always convert H.264 to DNxHD for ease of operation, and everything runs relatively smooth until I attempt to view color corrected clips.

I was considering purchasing an external drive just for Cache, as the HDD is the bottleneck during playback.

Does my analysis make sense?
Would another HDD just for Cache speed up the system, or is it irrelevant if DR is just pulling cached clips from the existing HDD?

I'm trying to understand what I can do to increase performance.

Thanks in advance.

My guess is your GPU is more of an issue than the storage.
