Dedicated Video Card for MacPro Tower 2 x 2.4 Ghz Quad Core

PostWed Oct 21, 2015 1:31 am

Forum Friends - I'm shopping for a dedicated video card for my MacPro Tower to display DaVinci Resolve 11, eventually 12, for 4K playback. Who is loving what?

2 x 2.4 Ghz Quad Core Intel Xeon
20 GB Ram 1066 MHz DDR3

Thanks, Stuart

Yep, Titan X 12GB here too, and it flies.
Heard good reports about 980Ti 6GB, but R12 seems more memory hungry.

Thanks Jack, thanks David.

Jack, I"m curious about your setup as you have both a BlackMagic DeckLink card, as well as the Titan. Are you using the DeckLink card for dedicated output to a video monitor and the Titan for the Resolve interface?

Also wondering about the DeckLink Cards that have HDMI out as well as SDI. Can the HDMI on those output a 10 bit signal?

You guys just using a. 6>8 pin adapter and just running the Titan X in the Mac no problem?
I've got a dual 6 pin 980 4gb as the power draw is so much lower, but curious about putting my Titan X in there if I had to

Decided to purchase MSI 980Ti 6GB card. Psyched for its arrival! Will update once I've had a chance to take it through some paces.

Let us know how you like the 980Ti and also let us know how you are powering it.

There's no mystery about how powering it : you plug the only 2 cables available into it, with 6 to 8 pins adapter if needed...

Sam, if I understand correctly, there are a couple ways you can power this card in the cMP:

Option 1) Use only the two power connectors on the logic board, with one 6pin to 6pin cable and one 6pin to 8pin cheater cable. Total power available to the GPU is 225W.

Option 2) Use the two power connectors on the logic board, in addition to grabbing power from a SATA port, with a dual 6pin to 8pin Y-cable. Total power available to the GPU is 300W.

Option 1 is simple and sleek, but *theoretically*, the logic board and PCI connections alone do not supply sufficient wattage to power this card. Option 1 way work fine in practice, though, which is what I am curious to learn about.

Ok ok, JP, I realized afterwards that my answer was a bit... abrupt/rough I would say... Sorry about that...
And yep, you may be right about theory, but actually I don't know where your "225W" specifically comes from.

Legacy MPs have a total amount of wattage (is it a correct word ? hehehehe ;) ) available from the logic board and PCIe ports.
I think, after scrolling the web for ages, that a 980Ti can be powered in a safe way by a legacy macpro IF your 3 other ports are not overcrowded by "supersucker" cards  .
2010 and 2012 MPs have 1000W for the whole stuff, 2008 MP has 1400W, and the hardware system is well made enough to cope with charges we're writing about.

So I - totally - understand your waiting for a genuine answer, but even here on the BMD forum, you could find some.

Now, I'll wait fore some too... curious too ;)

Sam, each logic board GPU power connection provides up to 75W, and the PCI slot provides up to 75W, for a total of 225W.

I knew you'd answer that :)
I have a gtx 680 (claiming 195 W) + full loaded pcie slots, including another AMD GC (total amount : far more 30 W). Find some comments about gtx 680 Ti in a legacy MP, you'll find some, then ask... ;)

I am powering the TitanX off the internal power supply with no issues, it doesn't suck a lot of power.
Yes we are using a BMD card for monitoring, and the Titan X is running the GUI and handling the compute.
It runs like a dream.

Dave are you using a MacPro? If so, what era?

Thanks for the feedback all. I will report my findings. I have a mid 2010 MacPro.

FYI:

980Ti
Power Consumption: 250 W
Minimum System Power Requirement: 600 W
PCI Power Connectors:
 1 x 6-pin
 1 x 8-pin

TitanX
Power Consumption: 250 W
Minimum System Power Requirement: 600 W
PCI Power Connectors:
 2 x 8-pin

We have them in a couple of the old towers, one is an early 2010, I'll have to check the rest, but I am sure they are older.

You see, JP ?
You may find dozens of posts like Stuart's one; forget about your 225W theory, better take global GC + PCIe consumption into account...
And remember 2010 & 2012 MPs have 1000 W, 2008 has 1400 W.
