Handling decode quality for playback

PostFri Dec 11, 2015 9:40 pm

While in DR 12.1, playback of clips are slow and often twitchy. To alleviate the issue, I would set the decode quality of each clip that I am editing/coloring to Quarter Res. When I am done editing/coloring and ready to Deliver, I have to go back to each clip in the Color room and change the decode quality to Full Res otherwise it renders a poor output. Before I save and end the project session (after delivery), I go back and reset all the clips to quarter res. If I don't do that, the next time I open the project, at full res some of the clips (if not all) will display with highly visible noise to the image (lines, off color, etc.). Besides upgrading my hardware's GPU, is there a better way to handle this process?

Select "Force debayer res to highest quality" on the delivery page.

in the settings there are two debayer options, one for playback and one for when you park on a frame.

change those first

then set to [debayer at max quality] in output.

di not go shot ti shot, is inefficient

Well, everything went well after I applied Walter's and John's suggestion. Then without doing anything else, I save the project and shutdown my PC. This morning when I open the project, I was left with a new issue (see attached images). All the clips where fine prior to my last save. I'm baffled and can appreciate the help on why this is happening and how to fix it. Thanks again!

Not sure what you meant by refresh thumbnails but I did quit Resolve and shut down the PC. I restarted the PC and open the project in DR. Wouldn't that refreshed the thumbnails? My cache is in an external USB 3.0 drive which is always mounted on the same drive letter and path, and always plugged in the same USB 3.0 port of the PC.

can you force delete cache from resolve?

I can force delete cache from resolve. So far here is what I did:
1. Delete ALL render cache and restarted DR.
2. Set reder cache to Auto

Some clips are still distorted but much better. Here are a couple of the example images...

So I'll have to delete all render cache each time?

Is this setting in DR 12.1? I don't see it. What I got is in the Raw Image where it has the option to set the Decode Quality and Playback Quality. In an article I read on timeinpixels.com, it said to set both of this to Quarter Res. Is that what you are suggesting? Then when I deliver, just set the debayer to max quality?

I get this sometimes on weaker GPUs. How much VRAM do you have and what's your footage?
Now that the cat #19 is out of the bag, test it as much as you can and use the subforum.

NVidia 745 4 GB but I'm just doing HD from a BMPCC shot RAW.

The GPUs are definitely a bottleneck here.

You only need to set quarter-res playback in the Config page, not on a per-clip basis.
