Video Files and DR 12 on same OS Drive - Excellent playback!

PostTue Dec 22, 2015 7:25 pm

It used to be the holy grail of video editing and grading that system drives and video files need to be separated on different drives and the video file drives RAID 0'd up the ying yang. By accident this weekend I was unable to get my external video drive working well so I just tried putting the video files on the system drive (512 GB PCIe NVMe drive) and I actually got better playback of my 4K XAVC-I Video files than with an external HDD in RAID 0 - realtime on the edit tab and 22-24 fps on the Color tab - project was 2160p 29.97 (was getting 15-17 before on the color tab.)

I think the time has come with the advent of M.2 PCIe NVMe Gen 3 X 4 drives that give us read/ write speeds of 2500/1500 mb/s and especially when they are coming out in 2TB or greater sizes in the next year or so that a single drive would be sufficient - especially in a laptop.
