apply LUTs

PostThu Dec 24, 2015 12:25 am

Hi there

On my timeline I have a bunch of clips. I apply a LUT to all of my clips in the mediapool to neutralize them. Is there a way to apply an additional default LUT, without going through every single clip, adding a node and then applying the LUT?

A couple ways to do that:
1- apply the lut in the project settings under output LUT
2-In the COLOR page, switch you node graph to TIMELINE, create a node and apply a LUT to it. It will be applied on the Hole timeline
3- in COLOR page, put you LUT on the first clip then select the 2nd and shift-clic the last clip. Once they are selected, middle-clic the first clic and the look will be copied to all the other nodes.

You could also try avoiding the use of LUTs entirely and just color-correct them by hand using the extensive tools provided within Resolve.

@Mathieu. Thanks sooooo much. This is exactely what I was looking for. I will apply them and then go through and tweak every clip here and there.

One could always hold out the desperate wish that were true. Blind faith in transforms, though has the smack of superstition about it, and the faint suspicion that it is the crack cocaine of color correction -- something that brings a kind of instant ecstatic gratification which is utterly beyond controlling. That said, there is a reason for transforming source media originated in a specific colorspace with the intent of offering more optional latitude throughout the post production workflow. It often works, it sometimes fails spectacularly.

If I am the one supposedly making the music, it feels like an advantage to be able to tune my own instrument.

jpo, I'm one of the few colorist out there that can write a tetraedrical LUT direct transformation (the core of light illusion) and i don't need faith because i have science. when i use a lut i intimately know why, where, how and drawbacks.

let's think about two cameras with two different primaries and tonal range: can you fiddle with your control until they match?

sure you can.

but, every camera has a mathematical representation for tonal range and given that Resolve cannot allow me to script directly GLSL calls, a lut will do as elegantly.

let's think about the next movie I'm doing: DP has his own film emulation thar he like (from arri Munich), and all the vfx are done in liner light (2000 of them). I simply apply the correct transformation from liner light to the cineon log choose by the client and dailies, vfx, plates graphics, all match.

knobs turned? just a select all and right click.

it is like science, if you know what it is you can use it.

Technical and creative LUTs should really be distinguished separately when this debate arises. Creative LUTs are absolutely no substitute for the skilled eye and craft of an experienced colourist, but technical LUTs are an entirely different matter altogether. Being able to build custom LUTs (by means of expressions and spreadsheet entries) is a very useful thing, allowing a colourist greater control over both the signal and colour space.

agreed Paul, i see too much garbage lut out there and that is smothering what good luts can do for you. ..

Joseph is truly a poet. That's the best thing I've read this week. ;)

And for Walter: I have no problem with a custom LUT created from scratch for a specific project. I'm just not too fond of the "100 LUTs for $99.95" offers out there on the net, particularly LUTs that yield destructive results when used by people who don't know any better. Custom LUTs are fine, and the mechanism used by Arri's Alexa LUT generator is very good.
