extracting the [embedded matte] from a TIFF in the node tree

PostThu Feb 11, 2016 5:28 pm

This was a old topic:

http://forum.blackmagicdesign.com/viewtopic.php?f=21&t=42537&hilit=+embedded+matte

but nobody seems to have a solution.

This is the issue:
1) if I have a tiff/dpx file and there is an external associated matte, I can reveal that in the node tree, manipulate it and use it as I see fit.
2) if the matte is embedded in the file itself, resolve will ONLY use it for compositing purposes, and not allow to "detach it/reveal it" in the node tree.

The issue come form a series of subtitles that I have to add a drop shadow to it: if the matte is separate, I can simply in the node tree make a branch of the key tree, shift, add and done.

BUT I cannot detach the matte from an embedded image!!!

HELP!!!!

You can kind of do a drop shadow from a TIFF if you composite it twice, drop in the black title shadow first, then drop in the white title on top of it. But it's kludgy. I would hate to do it for hundreds or thousands of subtitles. I would just hire somebody to sit there and cut and paste for a couple of days and use the script to generate real title generator titles.

that was one of the workaround, we end up to have nuke re-do the tiff's, I'm more concern about extracting the alpha in the node tree, I think it should be possible

Would Add Alpha Output do what you're looking for?

P. 917 Resolve 12 manual:

the Alpha output in the Node Editor is an optional output that you can turn on to create clip transparency using operations inside DaVinci Resolve to create composites against other clips on lower video tracks.

no, you cannot extract the original matte from the tiff in order to pipe it to the alpha output, that is the issue.

What if you import the same clip again but this time as a matte file, and
associate it with itself? The matte information should be accessible in the node tree..

nope, you will see the RGB plane as matte, not the embedded.

that also will force (in my case) to manually find 180 subtitles and link them one by one. ..

Only 180 subtitles? Piece of cake. Hire me, I'll come over and do it for you in a day. ;)

lol... no I paid 0$ for having the flame artist do it for me.

but I'm in that situation over and over, it seems a missing function that should be there

Hi Walter,

I could not do it in the node tree but in the time line you can duplicate the titles track, set the lower title (in the inspector) to 'Composite mode = subtract' which will make the shadow black. Adjust position and opacity to desired shadow size and opacity.
For softness: In color page select lower title (shadow) and add alpha output in node tree. Connect title node alpha out to new alpha output. Use blur to soften.

You can copy and paste attributes to do many titles at once. Also add or copy the grade to each title too.

yes, that is one of the workaround tried by my colleague, unfortunately in the mix bag of those titles, some where full white image (not just the text), so you have also to extract the black and white matte and make that the title itself if you want a black drop shadow.

and the repositioning start to became a nightmare with two layers. ..

but thanks!
