Mixing two GTX Titan

PostMon Feb 15, 2016 3:01 pm

Hey,

I currently run a GTX Titan 6GB how would Resolve act if add another GTX Titan but with 12GB?
I remember people having trouble with mixed cardes like a K4000 and a any GTX, with the slower card pulling the system back instead of adding more computing power.
Would this be the same case?

Honestly, I'd sell the 6gb Titan on ebay and get 2 x 980ti's. From my testing, I see no point in 12GB of VRAM and the Titan X performs about the same as the 980ti in all tasks. I can't exactly remember but I think I run out (with 2 x 980ti's) of VRAM at about 10 nodes of CC PLUS 3 or 4 nodes of temporal NR at 100 on an UHD timeline. Unless you plan on doing 8k timelines with NR it seems that the Titan X is a bit of a waste over the next couple years at least and you'd get more bang for your buck in 2 x 980ti's.

my 2 cents

If you add a 12GB Titan, and the 6GB Titan is still in your system, then it will only use 6GB of the 12GB card.

So yeah, you would be better off with a pair of 980Ti 6GB cards in that scenario, or sell the 6GB Titan and pickup a pair of 12GB cards.

In short, the 12GB card will be wasted if you keep the 6GB card in the computer.

Worth noting that you will need Resolve Studio to harness the power of more than one GPU for processing, just in case you're on the free one. You can of course use one for GUI and one for processing still.

Also worth noting for many tasks if you don't have a lot of cpu power (i.e. dual 12 core Xeon) you may not see a ton of gain with a second Titan X. You kind of need to scale whole systems up together. Cpu/gpu/ram/storage speed.
This used to be not so much the case with older, slower gpu and it made a big difference having 4 gpu. Today not so much.

because you already have the 6gb titan, can you snoop around and see if you can find a leftover 6gb twin?
