Macpro 4,1 no performance gain using gtx 980ti

I have read all the success stories on using gtx cards with os x 10.10.5 using the cuda acceleration, so i bought a card myself.
Unfortunately i cannot get my machine to be any faster at rendering than it was using its own ati 5770 that came with it.
I have the latest nvidia webdrivers, the cuda driver installed, tried it both on davinci 12 and 11.3.
Can you please advise on how you made it work?
