Resolve live SDI video vs data range.

PostMon Apr 04, 2016 3:34 pm

Hey all!

I tried Resolve live with a BMCC via SDI and an Ultrastudio Express. It worked fine, however the image seems to be in video range with the display on data, i.e. I can see it clipping on the scope at 940 (the black is pretty high too). This is with the camera on "film" mode. I tried all the settings I could find with no change.

Using a BMDfilm to Rec709 LUT seems to rectify the problem (I see a proper image and the waveform fills up). Is that supposed to happen this way? I get what the "film" profile is supposed to be doing, I don't get why it's clipping at 940 and applying the LUT changes that. Ultrascope, by the way, displays the waveform as I'd expect (0-100), but I can't use that because I can't find a reasonably priced long thunderbolt cable.

Is there something I'm missing in this workflow? What I want to do is use Resolve as a production monitor and exposure aid, as well as try some simple grading while on set.

Thanks.

I saw it behaving the same way (seeing video levels) however I didn't have time to investigate and fixed it by color correction.
It looks like there should be a switch for input data/video level but I don't think it's there.

Anybody?
Is the only way to do it to make a grade? Like gain of 1.1676 (to get the range of 940-64 to 0-1023) and then offsetting until pure black hits 0? Is this accurate enough?

DaVinci Resolve Manual - Chapter 6 - 'Data Levels, Color Management and ACES'

12 pages long and has info on data/video levels etc and how and where to switch between them and general advice - it will point you in the right direction (I think). :)

I haven't check it recently but would suspect nothing changed.
The problem is that there is no similar setting for Resolve Live input levels. The mentioned input levels for capture work, as described, only in Capture mode in Media page.

So I guess this can be classified as a bug? I mean, most all SDI feeds would be in video range, and if there's no way to set it... Is there somewhere where I can report it?

Paul I'm pretty sure this setting does not affect Resolve Live, as I tried changing it a thousand times to no avail.
