LUT Gallery?

PostTue May 10, 2016 4:54 pm

Hi. I'm a DI and advert colorist and I often use film emulation LUTs for grading. I have an extended list of LUTs, and loading them in the Resolve folder makes the software take more time to start. Plus, the menus for navigating the LUTs are not the fastest way.
It would be great to have a plugin or feature that lets you navigate LUTs like the gallery looks, showing them in thumbnails, and maybe letting you navigate folders outside the LUT folder, so it's easier to select which one to use and then copy them to the LUT folder.

Does anyone know of anything like this? As a plugin or maybe a standalone LUT viewer?

Thanks,
Rodrigo.

Also interested by a way to test a lot of LUTs easily. When you have several set of LUTs it's a real pain to find the good one.

For my pack of LUTs I built an online LUTs previewer to test all the looks quickly. You have just to drop a JPG/PNG frame and then you can switch between LUTs with up and down keyboard arrow keys. It's extremely fast, once full web app loaded (around 10MB). Give it a try : preview.iwltbap.com

I started to build a standalone application that can do the same for external LUTs, but I had some issues and I temporarily suspended the project. It's complicated because, to be loaded in a second, each LUT must be converted in a specific format and for the moment I'm unable to automate this long multiple steps process. Even if it was automated it would take around 3-4sec per LUT. So if you have a huge library of hundreds of LUTs it would be too long. I don't abandon the idea but I'd be happy to find an existing tool to do this :)

You have go the long way around and save all of your luts as power grades using the same picture that you are familiar with. That's the only way I know how to do what you want to do in resolve

That is an effective solution and can work.

Another approach would be to just not use a LUT at all and match the look with a grade, then save that as a Powergrade. I think in general, most (but not all) LUTs can be duplicated just using the curves, primaries, log controls, and secondaries already in Resolve, and you can do so non-destructively. But... it does take time and experience.

I just lost the ability to use LUT Gallery.
Im getting the red squares in Resolve.
The LUT Gallery app is telling me im not registered.
Where do I register?
It was installed in Resolve and worked fine but I guess it was in trial mode.
There are no setup notes to be found anywhere in Google.

I think it's unlikely that we will see a Windows version. People have been asking for this for six months but the software developer has made no comment. To me that sounds like the Windows version has been dropped.

Hm, any alternative on windows ? Even a standalone would be nice. I tried LUTastic 3D but it
works quite differently and does not offer the same functionality.

Hi there,

Agreed... I think they should focus on making apps which really works, answering people telling them when it doesn't*, and read when users would like to try.... Especially here on BMD's forum, while BMD can be proud of giving answers to users :) .
*a co-worker had hard times with crashing Color Finale in FCPX

Aside, the LUT Gallery concept is great, because so far you need to make a power grade for each LUT so that you can see it appear with icon + name in the gallery.

Now that Apple has upped their game with pretty decent color grading in FCP-X he has to move on…
Now that the cat #19 is out of the bag, test it as much as you can and use the subforum.

Tried it once a few weeks ago, it was seriously buggy...

I my case it is completely stable. An initial problem is that large folders with more than say
50 cube-files need some time to generate icons and during this period you should not
touch anything otherwise Resolve crashes. However, this is only needed once and afterwards
LUT gallery is just wondeful.
