Exporting 4K/UHD to YouTube - PC codecs

PostFri May 20, 2016 11:43 pm

According to Youtube, they will accept various codecs for 4K content, including:

VP9
H.264
ProRes

The bit rate should be between 35-70 Mbps, and the clip should be less than 15mins long.

Davinci Resolve on PC gives none of those codec options when exporting 4K footage.

How can I get 4K footage to Youtube from Resolve ? Must I use a 3rd party app to recode it ?

Are you trying to encode 4K or UHD? True 4K needs the studio version!

H.264 should be available.

Hello,

Yes I have the full Resolve Studio licence, using version 12.5b2

I'm encoding UHD (3840x2160) (Ursa Mini footage in DNxHR) and would like to encode to WebM or H.264 for upload to YouTube.

However, when I select to export to H.264 I get the following message: "Exceed Resolve Max Output Resolution for H.264"

And there's no WebM / VP9 format that I can see.

Thanks in advance.

You are using very old Resolve beta code. Please update to the current version.

Also, I'm guessing you are on Windows 7, which may not support this resolution.

This update may or may not help with that:

Thanks, Dwaine.

I'm on 12.54 and that update is already installed but you are right about Win 7Pro x64.

Bob, my response was to the OP.

The presets you list are all there are.

But what happens if you manually select H.264 at UHD resolution? Will that render on your system?

I get a "recording failed with error: failed to encode the video frame "

But I did try mpeg 4 instead of .264 and it seemed to work except on playback it pauses at my transistions and I have to push play again?

thx

I get an error "recording failed with error: failed to encode the video frame " when trying export UltraHD Video with MP4 container with h.264 codec
Windows 8.1
Resolve 14b6 (but with 12.5 same error) free version
if I choose Quicktime with MPEG 4 it works
As primary 4k export to youtube so they recommend MP4/h.264
Why I get error and what to do?

Surprisingly, You Tube accepts DNxHD for HD uploads. (Though frustratingly, not when exported from DaVinci Resolve. It does work when exported from Adobe Premiere Pro. So BMD...something's not quite right with your DNxHD exports.)

I was told that YouTube now also accepts DNxHR, which is needed for higher than HD resolutions, so maybe try that.

that's not very surprising. youtube is just using ffmepg based solutions for transcoding, like most other internet video services.
if you can play your file by ffplay, mpv etc., your chances are very good, that it will work on youtube as well.
it's also a quite useful way to test and avoid color deviations in advance.
