Timeline zoom functionality

PostWed Jun 01, 2016 9:24 pm

The current functionality of zooming is unintuitive.

Case: I'm often scrolling ahead on the timeline, then decide to change the zoom (with Cmd + shortcut) to navigate at a different speed, and the timeline jerks back to where the playhead was. Very frustrating if I scrolled for a while, as I have to restart the process.

Think it would be better if zooming occurred where cursor was, not where the playhead is. This is the functionality in Premiere Pro and it feels much better.

On 12.5.0b.042.

another +1 here

Is there a shortcut for "center timeline around playhead", so one could jump to the playhead after zooming on own decision?

We need to have both zooming - where the playhead is and where the cursor is.
This is the functionality in Final Cut Pro 7 and it feels much better.

And add one function - centering of timeline where playhead is. I miss me it very much.

+100

DaVinci really needs this.

DaVinci also needs a hand too like in Adobe Premiere to move the timeline around.
Every software corporation thinks that they have the best interface.
The results is a big mess, a conflict of conditional reflexes for a user.

How to reach them and tell we need it to be implemented finally? Anybody? :?

Or V18... I'll come back on V20.

now seriously, this is important and it shouldn't be hard to implement for the final V16. It is not a super big feature that would had to be announced and promoted. It is a BASIC feature. That's all.

Add to the the zoom in/out itself.

It would be great to scroll the mouse/trackball for that. I understand the Win version can do it. On Linux, this feature is still pending.

This isn't a configurable option? Did someone patent timeline zoom based on mouse position, or...?

Davinci, please roll this bad boy out with the Studio 16 release. Pretty please.

Example:

Timeline > Zoom Style
1. Zoom at Playhead
2. Zoom at Mouse Position

I might try and create an AutoHotKey macro that finds the top of the playhead based on the current mouse position which performs a click on the playhead and then holds down CTRL while you scroll.

Just signed up to add 100, 000, 000.

I've been waiting to switch to Premiere to Resolve for a while and this is a big one for me.

Having to place the Playhead to scroll in adds another step in navigating the timeline which is frustrating and adds time accumulated.

Please implement and option to zoom to mouse cursor in resolve!

1) yes, as quoted in another thread. R&D read every single comment, even if they don't directly reply to them
2) there are about 10 millions licenses and dozen of user groups in multiple languages, the list of things to do is enormous (again, from R&D mouth).

+1 for zoom to mouse cursor (instead of zooming to wherever the playhead currently is).

a lot of us use ALT + middle mouse wheel to zoom in and out so it's only natural that it follows the mouse pointer instead of playhead. also coming from premiere it felt un-intuitive.

hope this can be toggled in future versions. ...or has it already and i can't find the setting?
thank you

Related question: Zoom in/out = MiddleMouseWheel, Scroll up/down = CTRL + MiddleMouseWheel, but I can't figure out how to scroll left/right.

In other words, I'm zoomed in so I can't see everything, so I want to move over to the left, I don't see how. I read in this post someone said just click and drag using MiddleMouseWheel, but it did not work for me. Any suggestions?

It is pretty rare nowadays to have a mouse without a scroll wheel. Zoom to cursor would be nice though.

Re: Timeline zoom functionality

Related question: Zoom in/out = MiddleMouseWheel, Scroll up/down = CTRL + MiddleMouseWheel, but I can't figure out how to scroll left/right.

If you hover your mouse cursor over the timeline time ruler (top of timeline area) and press the ALT key you can then scroll left/right using the mouse wheel.

On another note sure wish they would allow us to mouse wheel scroll in the timeline without needing the ALT modifier key. An option in the preferences would be nice...

The solution that worked for me, to move left and right within the viewing window, was to hover over the window and use ALT + MiddleMouseWheel scrolling.

Thanks guys!

Nope. I bet this all must be re-thinked and re-worked, the way it is in Final Cut for instance. It one the most important things in editing we deal with constantly, but it's implemented a very wrong way

Easy - a trackpad. Editors are often using this instead of a mouse. Especially on macs. Many laptops now have a button-less trackpads too, so this isn't a vacuous question, trust me

Resolve is designed to work with a mouse (with a center whees).

10 bucks ans you're set. I don't see BM changing the whole interface for parts that don't use the mouse.
