Gamma Blackmagic design 4K film

PostWed Jul 13, 2016 10:24 am

Hi,

I recently received some test footage made with the Blackmagic Production Camera 4K EF for color grading.
The files are RAW DNG imported in DV Resolve.
I don't understand the options in the camera RAW settings. For this kind of footage, I always use the BMD Film gamma. But here, I only have the choice between "Blackmagic design 4K Film" or "Blackmagic design Video".
Is it a setting coming from the camera that needs to be fixed before shooting? Or is this "Blackmagic design 4K Film" gamma equivalent to the BMD Film?

Thanks.

I believe the options are covered very well on pp. 131-135 of the manual.

The "BMD 4K Film" settings basically give you a Log-C type image (a log image that can be color-corrected to work in Rec709), and Rec709 would decode it for dailies. Try them and see how they look to you, on the monitor and on the scopes.

Arf... RTFM! Thats's right, I should have started here.
Anyway, since I was looking for a Log-C gamma to start grading, I picked up this gamma as it was looking pretty close to what I wanted.
Thanks Marc for your input.
