High DPI Display and Resolve

PostWed Jul 20, 2016 9:38 pm

Hi there,

I'm having issues using Resolve on my 4K Display. My DPI scaling is set to 150%; I deactivated DPI scaling for Resolve inside the .exe and any shortcut. However, that simply doesn't work, it's the same as when I'd have it not activated.
Everything is SO big, I can't work at all, as you can see from the Screenshot :( How do I get this fixed, using Resolve with a high DPI display?

Best,
Lucas

have a read through of the latest version 12 configuration guide. There is some advice concerning the UI and higher resolution graphics displays. It is noted that Resolve is optimized for the Retina 5K screen (5120x2880) and it will scale "in a number of ways" for other resolutions, down to 1440x900 (a lot of laptops).

Try scaling your particular output screen to somewhere between 1920x1200 and 3840x2160.

There is also more advice somewhere in this forum perhaps using search terms like UI and screen resolution...

Can you set your scaling to 100%?

We are having a look into this but for now 200% will be your best option.

Hi jPo,

in Windows you set the scale only by percent, not resolution like on OSX. 150% should, coming from 3840x2160, equal to 2560x1440; so right in the middle? Not too important here, but I'm on 4096px horizontal

Hi Peter,

I set the scaling in Windows to 100%, then everything looks like I think it should be (see attached screenshot). However now my windows are a tad small to be properly readable.
I also set it to 200% for testing - first, now everything is so big inside the OS I feel like retired :) no way it could stay like this. Also, I attached a screenshot of Resolve, I think you'll see pretty clear why this is no option either :O I tried deactivating and leaving DPI scaling in the EXE, nothing happened, stays like that

Would like to see this addressed as well. Can one bypass the UI size changes by using a manifest file like some of us have used for Photoshop so that windows scales the interface instead?

Both the Resolve and Fusion gui dont do well on HIDPI displays. One of the reasons I went back to a standard DPI display. It's a shame considering Blackmagic sells 4k+ cameras but their software isnt usable on a 4K display without the UI being either way too big or way too small.

Resolve itself has way too big buttons and too much unused space between them so looking at 100% on uhd 17' inch feels just right to me. But yeah fusion would definitly be more usable with 150% scale.. There should be a slider to dynaamically choose the desired scale of UI hope there will be once...

I actually wouldn't mind if it stayed small. My issue is that if I DPI scale the display, Resolve gets big beyond usability :(

If it just stayed the way it is at 100% DPI scale, I would be fine with that

I had similar issue with camera to scope in Mac retina. I used a small utility from App Store called display pro or something and it will allow you to set the desired resolution of the screen like in Windows. It solved the scope full screen issue in retina display

You've most probably noticed that - with a single-screen UI setup only - choosing Full Screen enlarges controls size (e.g. making color wheels larger), thus making the UI Viewer even smaller. This is somewhat counter-intuitive - but for that reason I'm not using the Full Screen mode (it's also easier to access Windows menu and other running apps; it also allows to minimize the UI window when I must answer that important email that just arrive, for instance...

Doesn't matter if the checkbox for deactivation of DPI scaling is set or not, DaVinci gets really big and unusable...

After the announcement, I directly installed 12.5.2 with high hopes this would be fixed. It's not :/

The issue is that Resolve just shouldn't scale at all, it should just behave as if no DPI-Scaling was enabled.
Is there any roadmap when such issues may be fixed? I believe this is not too big of a deal as virtually any other application (aside of Fusion, hint hint) is able to do it, and adds a lot of usability in the end?

I too would like to know when or if this is going to be fixed. It's not like this a small issue, it effects the whole usability of the software. I've had to put with this for what must be nearly a year now and the fact that blackmagic haven't created a solution for this yet is quite frankly taking the piss. It should be at the top of their priority list.

So... is the UI of Resolve 14 going to perfectly fit
to the new 4K Retina 21.5 iMac (4096x2304)
or there will be a problem ?
What about the second 4K display

I think this is more of a Windows problem. That said, the Windows 10 Creator Update has some DPI functionality (via the program shortcut) that helps with Resolves HDPI failings. It's not perfect but it's a big help.

You are quite right Robert, there have been some recent updates to Win 10 that changes the functionality of high DPI scaling. I've just tested it, by allowing the system to handle scaling you can indeed force Resolve not to scale to such gigantic proportions but we are only talking a small increase in screen real estate. The large downside however is that everything becomes blurry so isn't really helpful.

On the plus side though we now can do audio in a grading app, I can now sack my dubbing mixer and throw away £20k's worth of protools hardware. Thanks Blackmagic, you've been a really big help.

Can someone from the Resolve team please comment on this? When can we expect it?

I am currently using the free version but I intend to upgrade to the paid version of 14 when it releases. However, if there is no proper HDPI scaling, I won't upgrade.

Your software is unusable on my 4k laptop right now since the whole interface is so tiny I can't read it, and whatever rudimentary option I have make it all look blurry. HDPI screens have been around for a while now, so this shouldn't be as big of an issue and most other software providers have made it work.

So please take your HDPI users into account before the final release of 14.

Thanks Robert, that's what I am experiencing as well.

For any BM employees who would care to take a look at the third image Robert has kindly provided, you can clearly see how blown up the GUI is. This is on a UHD monitor yet there is only room for 2 video tracks (3 at a stretch) and a couple of audio tracks. You are pushing Resolve as an offline system yet how do you expect someone to do an offline with that many tracks?

When are we going to get an option for GUI scaling?? It appears that right now there is only one setting and that is at 2x the original. 1.5x would be ideal. Right now 1x would be better if slightly uncomfortable but I can't even get that to work at the moment as 'Disable display scaling on high DPI settings' in the compatibility tab has no effect.

Nope. Blackmagic seem to turning a blind eye to it.

I was going to do a comparison between Premiere and Resolve to show the difference in the amount of video/audio tracks you can have on screen but I can't be arsed wasting my time on it as I know there doesn't seem to be anyone at BM willing to listen and I've already been on to support numerous times over the last 18 months. Basically, with source and programme monitors at 75% with Prem you can have around 7 video and 3 audio tracks in view at any one time, with Resolve you get around 4 video and 2 audio. For me this makes it useless as an offliner and a pain at best when onlining.

We need 150% scaling.

I do. 15 beta 5. Lack of HiDPI support is driving me crazy. The best solution I've found is to use the page zoom feature of Universal Access (in Gnome 3.28.2). I don't recall if I had to do anything to set it up -- I don't think I did -- but now I just use the shortcut super+alt+8 to zoom the screen to 200%. Still sucks, but at least I can see the buttons that way.

You can also add it to your application shortcut, works as well.

It's crazy. I would love to be able to ditch Adobe for good but trying to use Resolve on my setup is near impossible unless I want to squint at a tiny UI or laugh at a comically scaled UI.

I am far from being an expert but that command looks like it will just double the scale, something that Resolve will do anyway. It's far from the holy grail of 150% scaling that we are all crying out for.

Also, its deprecated in newer version of QT anyways. What's odd is it seems most of the environment variables QT uses, that allow us to control these kinds of things aren't respected in Resolve. Say, QT_FONT_DPI for example.

On my Asus laptop with UHD display, 250% is the "recommended" scaling option and the Resolve UI is fine. At 150 it's too small (for everything).

Any news on this, version 16.1, the end of 2019. With Windows 100% scaling everything is too small, and with any other scaling, 150, 175, 200, Resolve jumps to 2x the size, so very little fits on the screen. Will there be a fix, or is there a hack. I can switch my 3k x 2k screen to 1920x1080, giving it two huge black bars, but ironically, Resolve looks normal then! But you lose a lot of your screen real estate. BM, please! With cherry on top!

No improvement in 16.1.2 .
The UI is still obviously defined in pixels and not considering the display DPI to give buttons and menus a stable, physical size. Context menus still sometimes extend beyond the lower end of the screen when things change ( e.g. HDMI cable inserted andresolution automatically changes, yet the physical size of the laptop display obviously remains unchanged and so should the size of any and all UI elements).

The entiere desktop world has to much to learn from modern, mobile UIs that scale from 3.7" high-res touchscreen to a 37" low-res TV.

No support for multiple screens with vastly different DPI either (using a field monitor for the scopes or a hotel-TV for the media pool).

I have a MacBook Pro connected via Thunderbolt 3 to an LG 27" 5K display. I run both MacOS and Windows 10 via Bootcamp. Scaling is perfect on the Mac side, but on the PC side I'm seeing the High DPI scaling issue regardless of the settings I choose in "Display Settings," or whether I go into the properties on the .exe file and change how the application uses/interprets High DPI. I'd love to be able to get the same scaling on the Windows side that I enjoy on the MacOS side.
