CC done. Client wishes changes on edit (different NLE)

PostMon Aug 15, 2016 3:34 pm

Hi everyone!

I have just a question to you DaVinci Resolve pros and I hope you can help me.

When you do your color correction based on an XML file that you received from the editor (he uses Premiere or any other NLE), what is your process when you get a call from him like "sorry, we had to change some cuts and replace some pictures." a few weeks later?

Is my entire CC work gone?
Or can I update my current timeline in Resolve with the new XML file that I receive from the editor
and keep my work? :?

How to solve such rework?

Thank you for your tips.

Best regards,
Jeff

I hope you're charging by the hour! :D

I think if you use ColorTrace you should be able to import the new XML and it should reconnect to all the footage in your media pool and keep your grades. I also think if you're using Remote Grades that should happen too.

i do this commonly, i often grade a pre-locked feature, and then colortrace once piclok'd

i do this because of director and DP's avability -vs- post scheduales, and we can work with less of a feeling of a ticking clock hanging over our heads

I use remote grading option for this, as opposed to "local" in the project settings. This way the grade is applied to the master clip, so it doesn't matter in which timeline you have that clip, it will always reference the same grade. Then I use versions to deal with different instances of the same clip.

I wouldn't do this for a client, but I'm currently doing it for a film of mine, that I've been grading on my spare time. Every time I get a new cut from the editor and conform it to resolve, the shots that I've already graded show up with the grade in my timeline.

If it's a long project, like a feature film, I would suggest chopping up the project into reels -- say, 20 minutes long. That way, when changes come in, it's not quite the traffic jam it is changing a 20-minute timeline vs, a 2-hour timeline.

Thank you all for your tips! I guess "Remote Grades/Versions" should work for me.
