Advice

PostThu Sep 01, 2016 1:21 pm

Hello!

Please, I need help to verify the following computer configuration work fully in DaVinci Resolve 12.5 to render 4.6K RAW uncompressed. What makes me confused is if I should go for an Intel Core i7 6950X or below dual Intel Xeon E5-2640 2.4GHz 25MB V4, also if it is worth investing in dual Nvidia Titan X 12 GB. I only use one monitor, an Eizo ColorEdge CG248-4K.

I am deeply grateful for all feedback. Thanks in advance!

Motherboard:
ASUS Z10PE-D16 WS

Internal memory / RAM:
64GB, 32GB 2x Samsung (1x32GB) DDR4 2133MHz ECC LR-DIMM

CPU
Dual Intel Xeon E5-2640 2.4GHz 25MB V4

CPU Cooler:
Dual be quiet! Pure Rock (one for each CPU).

Graphic Cards:
Dual Nvidia Titan X 12GB (Pascal)

SLI Bridge:
HB Pro EVGA SLI bridge 2-Way (2 slot gap)

SSD 1 (Operating systems and other software):
OCZ RD400 512GB M.2

SSD 2 (the files I work with):
OCZ RD400 1TB + M.2 PCIe adapter

SSD 3 + 4 SSD in RAID 0 (destination rendering):
OCZ 960GB VT180

Chassis:
Phanteks Enthoo Pro Window Black

Additional fan to the chassis:
Fractal Design Venturi HF-14 140mm Black

Controller card for external connections
ASUS ThunderboltEX II / DUAL
Controller card PCIe, 2x USB 3.1 Type-C Type A +

Have you reviewed the Black Magic Design Configuration Guide?

It is the company position on validated platforms.

Dual CPU might help with threading Long-GOP extractions. You should be fine with 64 GB motherboard RAM.

Buy as many of the biggest, fastest GPUs you can afford. SLI does not work with Resolve.
Dual-X may not be as advantageous in the long term as the new-run 1080 cards. Power consumption... etc.

The rest is almost irrelevant -- with 4.6K RAW, you will need to pay close attention to bitrate through-put...
and I am not quite sure what you mean by "render 4.6K RAW uncompressed."

Have you done the math on the file sizes that you will need to accommodate?
By "uncompressed"... are you exporting .dpx sequences or some other wrapper?

If you are choosing SSD drives as render targets, we could be talking about a VERY substantial budget.

Thanks jPo for your feedback :-)

I'm completely new to film and have to admit that I hardly know what I'm talking about.

But what I want to do is shoot uncompressed to have maximum flexibility in the work. I will export the finished movie in Ultra HD or whatever the customer asks. I now understand that it is better that I replace the two 1 TB SSD with bigger HDD, for example, two 6TB WD. I shoot short macro films of jewelry, watches etc. and the finished films are no longer than a few minutes.

When it comes to the CPU, maybe it is better with an overclocked Intel Core i7 6950X?

for space and speed, I can recommend either the new ssd PCIe cards or do a 4x1tb 7200rpm enterprise raid internally with a good pci card if you go spinning disk.
