BMD or APP STORE version

PostWed Sep 07, 2016 11:55 am

how can i determine which version is installed on a given system?
the two versions use different paths for their databases, possibly among other issues.
what are the consequences of having both versions on a system?
what would be the best procedure for *cross grading* from one to the other and vice versa? will backing up the database also include settings and preferences, or are these stored another place?

I would backup the database you're using, then de-install that version of Resolve and install a clean version of Resolve that you intend to use from that moment forward.

To me, the full version (with dongle) makes the most sense -- the Mac-only version is too limiting.

+1

I'd also export running projects if this isn't the case already - just for safety reasons.

i am talking about the fact that the version downloaded from BMD site and the version downloaded from MAC APP STORE creates their databases differently, and in different places.
i am not talking about the free versus dongle versions

Neither was Marc, that's why he said the 'Mac only version'

The two versions are functionally identical but do not share the same database. I have made the switch from App Store version to dongle version and it is a lot easier to manage the database and system files (LUTS etc). If you run both versions they are completely separate and do not share anything. Not much point if you have the dongle!

Determining which version is installed is easy.... if it's the BMD full version it has a dongle.

The only advantages I can see for the Mac-only version:

1) lower list price ($495)
2) works on up to 5 machines at one time.

To me, there are more disadvantages than advantages, but I can see for certain applications some people would prefer the Mac-only version.

Looking into the next year, I think there could well be a lot of Mac users that jump ship to Windows.
