Windows laptops with GTX 1080 NVME2 64Gb etc - any good?

PostFri Sep 09, 2016 6:38 am

I now see laptops coming out from companies that have

GTX 1080 8gb x 2
1Tb of NVME M.2 (2000+MB read and 1500Mb write)
64GB 2400RAM DDR4
i7 quad core 6700 8MB
etc etc

If I only look at theoretical specs they look 16times faster than the best Mac Pro...

But as the old man on the mountain said there are Lies, Damn lies and then Specs :-)

Anyone tried these new super laptops for DVR12.5?

thanks

The ones I have seen have the GPUs SLI'd and I doubt that's user-selectable... IIRC, Resolve doesn't like SLI'd GPUs.

This is not true, When I've built systems with Resolve on them and the Client wanted the SLI on I found that Resolve ignored the SLI, and on all the previous models of Dual GPU laptops chassis's you can turn off SLI in the Nvidia control panel just like you can on a desktop.

I have a Clevo (in the US they are branded as Sager) single GTX 1060 laptop with a desktop 6700K CPU. It can take 2 NVME drives as well as 2 9.5mm 2.5 inch drives. The Chassis will also take a UHD screen. I found it's a nice machine, although because it's new the fans tend to be a loud under full load. This is usually fixed in a later BIOS.

I've also tested the same model with the GTX 1070 inside and when using the candle test I get 20 FPS at 18 nodes versus the desktop GTX 1070's 19FPS at 18 nodes. This is because the Laptop GTX 1070 has more CUDA cores but is clocked down slightly so overall it's the same if not more powerful than the desktop version of that card.

I haven't had a dual GPU model in yet so I don't know how loud they are

Dear Adam

Thanks for your feedback!!

I tend to shoot promos more and more (with up to 1TB of footage) and I plan to put that footage on the M2 drive and then connect a big monitor and keyboard etc.

A few questions...

How does the Clevo work with 4k ProRes 444 footage? I never have more than 8 nodes.
Have you also tried editing with multicam footage - say 12 x 4 k PRORES 444 video layers - but with no FX / nodes
How do the M2 drives handle playback - or are you putting footage in another place? - have you had a chance to RAID0 the M2 drives?
Any other issues I should look out for?

Finally- I see PCspecialist in the UK do a good deal on a similar model. Any advice?

many thanks again!
