License dongle check failed

PostSun Sep 25, 2016 10:05 am

I have an annoying issue that has been bugging me since I moved from OSX to Windows 10 and now I'm getting out of ideas.

At random I get a popup saying "License dongle check failed". Clicking OK dismisses the popup and Resolve continues as if nothing ever happened. This happens 1-3 times per hour.

I was thinking there might be some kind of USB power save issue so I moved the key around between all USB ports (no USB hubs or extensions cords), upgraded to latest motherboard BIOS, clean install of Windows, disabled power management for USB devices in the device manager and I even installed a separate USB PCIe card but nothing I did improved the situation.

HW specs: Asus P9X79 WS, i7 3930K, 32GB Corsair Vengeance, Corsair AX1200 PSU, GTX770 and GTX1080 GPUs, Decklink SDI
SW specs: Win 10 Pro, Resolve 12.5.2.010, Nvidia 372.90 (nothing else)

The USB dongle works fine in my iMac or if I run OSX (hackintosh) on the same machine.

Digging through the logs in "C:\ProgramData\Blackmagic Design\DaVinci Resolve\Support\logs" gave me no apparent clue (is that the right place to look?).

Anyone one else with the same issue? Any ideas?

I saw it occasionally on my win machine at home, I suspect a usb port as well.

More an annoyance than anything else though.

try to connect the dongle to a managed port with X79 chipset and not a port depent a driver (ASMedia).
(Update the bios?)

He already said he'd tried all the USB ports and that he was on the latest BIOS

@Daniel
Did you also update the USB 3 drivers and not just rely on the ones built into Windows 10? I've found that the built in ones can be a bit flaky so I always update to the latest from the manufacturer. You can even force in better Intel ones than the ones that come with Win 10

You could try updating the USB 3 controller to the latest then see if it settles down on the updated USB 3 controller

TBC but for this card:

No native USB 3.0 ports are included with the X79 chipset, so ASUS adds two external and two internal again with the help of ASMedia.

Yes I know, that's why I suggested updating the USB 3 controller to the latest drivers then to try using that. Makes no difference if they are built into the chipset or not I would still try updating them then see if the USB 3 controllers work better

Thank you guys for the good ideas. At least it puts me a little bit more at ease to hear I'm not alone with this. As you said, it's not critical but quite annoying. Especially when it happens while you have your eyes fixed on the monitor output and don't immediately notice the popup on the GUI monitor.

I have no antivirus installed besides the included Windows Defender thingy. Good idea to try turning that off for a while. Also I can verify the problem is the same after the anniversary update. I will definitely try new USB 3 drivers and see what happens. Thanks!

Debugging this takes quite a while since you may have to wait an hour or so for the popup to show :)
