Sound from source (DSLR camera) not working/showing

PostMon Oct 10, 2016 3:15 am

Hello all,

I am using the free version of DaVinci Resolve, version 12.5. I used a DSLR camera (Nikon D3200) to film some stuff of me talking, and the sound works fine on every other type of media player on my computer. But when I go to listen to the audio from the tracks on the edit part, there is zero sound. All of my video clips are a .MOV file. I have tried closing out and restarting the app, uninstalling and reinstalling it, making sure the "audio in/out" box is selected in preferences, making sure my speakers are playing sound, and I made sure the app wasn't on mute. I have an audio clip working on part of my intro to the video, which works fine as a seperate audio track. But the actual audio from the clips themselves wont work. Any help?

Select one of your DSLR clips in the Media tab, right-click and select 'Clip Attributes...' - Have a look there to see if the number and type of audio tracks is correct and that the are not muted for some reason. You can use this dialog to change the attributes as well.

So DR is not recognizing the audio. Note the audio channel count of "0". The audio may be AAC which causes DR to not recognize it. Last week I posted how to rewrap AVCHD (uses AAC) using ffmpeg so that the audio is converted to PCM and the video is not altered. Look for that posting and give that a try.

The first sentence of his original post, "I am using the free version of DaVinci Resolve, version 12.5. I used a DSLR camera (Nikon D3200) to film some stuff of me talking, and the sound works fine on every other type of media player on my computer." [emphasis added]

sorry, another senior moment.

in which case i think jay has pointed out the problem - probably a compressed audio format not recognised by resolve.

Thank you all for your replies but this software is too complicated and too headache inducing to try to deal with it. My girlfriend has a MacBook Pro with iMovie on it and I used that instead. Thanks again anyways.

You have to appreciate a comment like this, even if it is 'tongue-in-cheek' (is it?) - The 'free' nature of Resolve attracts many different users with varying workflow needs and experience. This is a reminder of that fact.

Good times....

I took it as simple and matter of fact.

I'm actually in two camps with Resolve. I need a program to serve a very simple "low brow" need that I have which is to edit multi-cam table tennis match videos at home after our club tournaments. I ended up licensing Lightworks a year or so ago, but frankly found it very counter-intuitive after using Premiere for years. Some of the Lightworks issues I saw with users there are very similar to what I'm seeing here with DR.

Anyway, this spring I grudgingly licensed Premiere CC (not a subscription software fan) for a year to use at home on the table tennis matches. But about a months later, I ran across DR for free. I poked around and found it marginal due to h.264 performance issues (Yeah sure, h.264 is not an ideal edit format. But DR's mediocre implementation of it just makes things worse.) Even so, I did manage to edit a 40 minute match with straight h.264 (not smooth, but good enough). But with proxies in place, DR works really nicely for multicam and is far more intuitive for me than was Lightworks. So now I am now poking around and learning it with studio use in mind - while my Premiere CC license is languishing - going largely unused. :^(
