How to get 120FPS Footage into Resolve 12.5

PostTue Nov 08, 2016 10:07 pm

Might be a silly question, but...

The BMUM4.6 is capable of creating 120FPS footage... it seems that in resolve, the frame rate of a clip maxes out at 96 (at least the dropdown doesn't seem to allow for higher FPS numbers)...

Am I missing something?

There's a few other forum topics on this. Resolve does read 120p tagged QuickTimes correctly, you just can't set that as the frame rate if it's not tagged. IMO, high speed footage should always be re-interpreted to the desired rate prior to editing so. This can be done as a 2 step process. Open clip attributes, set the frame rate to anything (so that it forces a change) and hit ok, go back in and set it to your project rate and hit ok. This will cause the footage to playback at 1 frame = 1 frame. You can then speed it back up to 120 using re-time if you need / want it to play in realtime.

Hm... so basically, I can't use Resolve to create proxies from DNG raw footage for dailies that have a framerate higher than 96... bummer... it wouldn't be so annoying if it wasn't a Blackmagic Camera not being fully supported by a Blackmagic Software ;)

If the clip is tagged at 120p and you render source clips without changing anything then it will render at 120p. My question though, is why do you need proxies at 120p? If the footage is intended as slo-motion then you can create 23.976p (or whatever your project rate is) proxies that play in proper slow motion.

Well, the clip being a bunch of DNG files directly from an Ursa Mini seems to NOT be tagged as 120p (or Resolve doesn't see it properly, whatever the case may be). So the basic problem of "why can't I set the FPS to 120 for any given clip" still applies (and there really isn't a good reason for the dropdown to NOT offer a speed that BMD cameras can actually record at...)

Fair enough. They should actually get rid of the drop down and replace it with an entry box, but that's another post.

On the other hand, is there a reason you need to set the clips frame rate to 120? Are you delivering at 120?

This has been my feeling all along. An entry box solves the problem and avoids future obsolescence.
