Tutorials compilation for technical questions and quick tips

Hello everyone,

I hope this thread doesn't exist already (but I didn't find it).

As some people suggested in the thread about the way to help those who are new to Resolve, I propose to make here a compilation of all the tutorials and doc that could be relevant to solve issues regarding the software itself.

It is not about achieving this or that kind of particular look, but only about questions such as : how do I manage users, how can I improve the playback, what is the difference between primary and logs...
(for the rest, maybe it is only a matter of experience, I don't know).

FIRST : the manual of course (héhé ;) ) : https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/support/family/davinci-resolve-and-fusion

[EDIT] and the Configuration guide (didn't find something more recent than this one... :? ) : http://documents.blackmagicdesign.com/DaVinciResolve/DaVinci_Resolve_12_Beta_Configuration_Guide.pdf

Then you have the free ripple training serie from Alexis Van Hurkman, who wrote the manual
https://www.youtube.com/results?sp=CAI%253D&q=da+vinci+resolve+in+under+5+minutes

Or the Goat's eye view tutorials there (didn't see it but it seems to be pretty complete)
https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC0xNsrzO-7vnWuCKwqgw2ng

For only editing tips, Redshark published some pretty good tutorials
http://www.redsharknews.com/tutorials

For going deeper in the editing process, we have to mention the book : The definitive guide to editing with Da Vinci Resolve.

Regarding colorgrading only there is the MixingLight Website, where it is possible to find free samples of the tutorials, and where it is possible to pay for an indepth training (because unfortunately everything comes at a price, either time or money...).
https://mixinglight.com/color-correction-tutorials/davinci-resolve-12-tutorials/

And also the Fxphd classes : https://www.fxphd.com/product/resolve-v12-fundamentals/

The color correction handbook, from Alexis Van Hurkman is also a must read (I think) - and contains exercices.

For the color theory questions there are a lot of infos on the Lightspace website here :
http://www.lightillusion.com/tech_info.html
And they also have a forum.

And for everyting about advanced colorgrading thoughts, the LiftGammaGain forum is full of very smart and experimented people.

Any help or new tutorials are welcome if it fits the purpose of technical and not esthetic topics (I don't know if the difference makes a lot of sense, but it would not be about achieving a sort of mainstream orange and teal look, but how to use the scopes, the curves, the difference beetwen offset and gain, etc...)

And if the admin thinks it worth to be sticked, so be it.

Alex

I would also praise Warren Eagles over on FXPHD. I like what Warren has to say because (like me) he comes from a telecine background, so he's been color correcting for more than 25 years. Warren also has a great sense of humor and a good personality, and that comes across very well in his tutorials.

https://www.fxphd.com/product/resolve-v12-fundamentals/

This is sorely in need of an update, and hopefully they'll do one for 12.5 soon.

I would add that MixingLight has a sale going on right now and they did just unveil their 12.5 add-on course, and Patrick Inhofer and the guys over there are very bright and know their stuff.

I also highly recommend the LiftGammaGain.com colorist discussion group, which encompasses much more than just Resolve. They're down for the moment due to maintenance but are scheduled to be back on 11/27/2016.

I find the key for all colorists is to open your mind to different ways of doing things. Once in awhile, even if I run into a complete idiot doing a tutorial on the web, they spark some interest in a new mode or a new approach to an operation I've done a thousand times, and sometimes it leads me to try something different. It never hurts to weigh the pros and cons of different approaches. In that respect, color correction is a constantly-evolving kind of process not unlike the role of the cinematographer. No one lighting setup will work for all situations, and I find the same is true for color.

But then, my philosophy has always been "I just bang on the knobs and then stop when the picture doesn't suck." That generally works for me, but the key is doing it quickly and making the client happy.

Davinci Resolve is international: (I invite other nations to share their Davinci Resolve formations)

And if there are any who have difficulties with the language of William Shakespeare, there are tutorials Davinci Resolve V12 in the language of Molière (When you have not practiced English for a long time... ) at VIDEO EFFECT PROD. I started my first weapons with version 11 and I learned a lot for a price really very modest view the quality to start well with this software. (Http://www.videoeffectsprod.fr/). Of course today there is a V12.x

Hi Jean-Claude,
Very tecky-geeky thing...very specific. Not sure this can be very helpfull for someone who just want to know if a particular GPU works with Resolve.
But it reminded me that I forgot the configuration guide from BMD in the list.
I'll add it in an edit.
As always, GPU power is just a matter of speed for the workflow and renders...and doesn't improve the skills.

:ugeek:

Cheers

Good stuff, thanks for all the links. I'm relatively new to DaVinci Resolve and found most of the above tutorials very helpful.

One thing that worked really well for me while (still) learning it is to look for solutions on YouTube. You can find tons of short clips of exactly what you may need to accomplish. Most of them are under 5 minutes long so even in midst of editing I can switch back to watch a tutorial.

Even simple things like how to do fade in/fade out I learned from YouTube. I had no idea you needed to use key frames and opacity and now I discovered a totally new function I would probably learn sometime few months down the road.

Ya, so I am not good at reading manuals, I think visualizing functionality is much better, for me anyway!

users who do not want automatic updates

PostPosted: Mon May 01, 2017 3:22 pm
by Jean Claude
Small trick for W10 users who do not want automatic updates (one that disrupts during work) but be warned by a popup. Afterwards, the update can be done when you want.
- log in as administrator
- key WIN + 'R'
- open: gpedit.msc + OK
- Computer Configuration => Administrative Template => Windows Components => Windows Update => Service Configuration Automatic Updates => 2 - Download and Installation Notification + OK + GPEDIT exit
- restart the PC

To prevent the update of a driver (NVIDIA for example to keep a version that works 373.06):
Https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/hel ... windows-10
- Run the file wushowhide.diagcab (depending on version of windows 1511 or 1607)
- next, until you see: Hide updates and then select NVIDIA.
- restart the PC

For W7 there were fixit but not all compatible with W10.

For W10 there are FixWin 10.0.1.0 for Windows 10:

We are pleased to release FixWin for Windows 10. It is a freeware portable application to repair & fix common Windows 10 annoyances & issues, that does not require to be installed.

It has been tested on Windows 10, 32-bit and 64-bit versions.

We first suggest that you create a System Restore Point.

Having done that, apply at least one time and restart your computer.

FixWin.exe is freeware and can be freely used for any personal non-commercial purposes only. It is supplied "as-is". The publisher or the author assumes no liability for damages, direct or consequential, which may result from the use of this software.

All product names, logos, and trademarks are acknowledged as the registered intellectual property of their respective owners.

FixWin has been developed for the Windows Club by Paras Sidhu.

Jean Claude, re The Best GPU for DaVinci Resolve, Quadro vs GeForce GTX, the article is a year old and nVidia have changed the architecture of the Quadro (from Maxwell to Pascal). The Quadro P6000 24GB might beat the GTX's, I don't know. Certainly a new technical comparison is required (of course value for money is very important too).

I'm new to Resolve and sampled many of the tutorials online. I finally decided on Alex Van Hurkman's tutorials at Ripple Training. I really like his style and he explains things so well while giving great tips throughout. I was concerned because he does not have a Resolve 14 version out but have found that using his Resolve 14 new features series with his Resolve 12.5 core training has worked well. They are very well organized by subjects so I can jump around to learn what I need quickly.

I just want to add that lowepost.com got the greatest collection of first-hand insight by the elite colorists around the world in their premium articles. Browse through them and you can get some really interesting inputs, both technical and creative. They also got some video recordings from grading sessions that you can study and colorist forum that seems to be more active from day to day. In that forum you can also find a collection of tutorials.

I have watched quite a few DR training videos. More of the ones I have watched so far have been for 12 or 12.5 as there really weren't many for 14. Seems like recently several good tutorials for 14 have been released.

MixingLight has a new v14 tutorial. It is free and 5.5 hours long. Lot's of good info.
The DaVinci Resolve 14 QuickStart Tutorial Course - https://mixinglight.com/course/davinci- ... uickstart/

RippleTraining has quite a few DR 14 tutorials. They have a 30% off coupon at the moment so think I will grab a few of these.

I'm doing a series of short, straight-to-the-point tutorials on Resolve V15. They are focused on showing colorists without much VFX experience the solutions that integrated Fusion brings to the table. They not a deep dive into the subject matter, but go beyond a feature demo.

Current videos:

End Credits in DaVinci Resolve:

DaVinci Resolve Basic Paint Cloning:

DaVinci Resolve Fusion masking:

The tutorials are made with the public beta version of Resolve. It's possible that the current release build may deprecate some of the demonstrated techniques.

Ripple Training just posted their Editing and Color Grading 101 in Davinci Resolve 15 course. The bonus is that if you recently purposed this title for Resolve 14, you get the v. 15 one as a free upgrade, at least I did just now. Looking forward to this one. Training is by Spencer Meyer, who did the v. 14 course as well.
