Grading footage with motion graphics

PostWed Nov 30, 2016 6:09 pm

What should be the workflow when grading footage that will contain Motion Graphics?
Should I ask for locked version without MG or grade in it as a final version with animations. What is your approach?

Greetings,

My advice is to receive any gfx as a separate file with an alpha channel that you can then overlay to match as necessary. You want to have as much flexibility as possible. In my experience I always benefit from being able to see the motion work in context, but not to have it as an obstacle to grading the footage. That said, I don't believe there is a single best approach, it really depends on the nature of a given project. I hope that helps.

Thanks guys. That sounds resonable. And how about letterboxing - if added in post we also should ask for version without it? Because I dont expect to recive proper resolution.

I would treat the letterbox the same as any motion graphics and get it as a separate file. In my workflow, we master out of Premiere with a color corrected video layer on the bottom, then a letterbox png layer and then a gfx / title layer on top.

Don't mean to hijack this thread, but what about more complex MG's e.g. keyframed opacity/transparency found in flares and smoke? Can an alpha channel or some other technique handle that? Or, is RT'ing between DR and the compositing program unavoidable?

Sorry, but do you mean that, yes, RT'ing is unavoidable or, yes, alpha channels can handle that? Thanks
