4K Footage Problem @ 4030 x 1704

PostThu Feb 02, 2017 10:08 pm

Hi there,

I have started using Resolve 12.5.4 and love it. However, I have hit a big stumbling block. I use FILMIC Pro with the iPhone for 4k video at 100Mbps using a Moondog Labs anamorphic filter. The footage (4030 x 1704) is imported fine, but the problem is Generate Optimized Media fails with an error when trying to create a proxy file for ease of scrolling on the timeline. Is there any way to maintain the above aspect ratio (which looks superb) and generate the optimised media please? Any help gratefully received.

Best wishes,

Chris

I'm guessing the answer is not a simple one.

My advice would be to manually transcode all the material to DNxHR or ProRes (whichever is most appopriate for your system) and use that for the entire project. H.264-based files are not good for post.

Are you using Studio or the free version? If the free version then you may not be able to do it as I'm pretty sure the frame size limit for the free version is UHD.

Having said that, what do you have it set to for the optimised media? If it's set to uncompressed you may be running out of space

Hi - many thanks for your replies ... yes this is DV 12.5.4 free edition. If the limit is 4k, then that might explain it. Are there detailed spec comparisons around between free and studio editions? Cannot see on the website specifically.

I wonder if a solution is to no select anamorphic lens hardware in FILMiC PRo - thereby forcing "normal" 4k res. I would get a squashed image, but after editing etc...de-squeeze to get the desired 4030 x 1704 resolution?

In all honesty, transcode the footage first anyway to a non long GOP codec, and using resolve will be a much, much better experience.

What's odd is that the full resolution can be edited, it is just that I cannot generate optimised media.

What do you have the optimised media settings set to?

I'm selecting DNxHR and quarter resolution. Further oddly, it works for UHD footage (generating optimised media).

Have you tried a different codec?

Thank you - this worked!!

From the drop down menu, if I choose "444 HDR" or "Uncompressed 10-bit", Generate Optimized Media works. Timeline now smooth 8-)

Any of the other DNxHR offerings (LB / SQ / HQ/ HQX) fail.

I'm glad that worked!

Just my experience.

I had the same problem with free DR but I had to convert the frame to 3840x1600 and was able to use DNxHRSQ.

I originally tried Cineform but it did not like 4030 x 1704 either. I ended up using Studio, which allow 4030 x 1704 with DNxHRSQ
