eGPU for DaVinci Resolve

PostTue Feb 28, 2017 6:30 am

I've got a bit confused about the eGPU.
I'm working on MacPro 2013 with dual AMD D700 cards. Adding Nvidia 980it will I be able to use all 3 cards for processing or the choice will be Cuda OR OpenCL?
If the choice is between AMD and Nvidia will it be better to add AMD RX480 as eGPU and have all cards working only in OpenCL

You shouldn't mix card manufacturers, so if you have AMD then you should really stick to AMD.

Also be aware that eGPU only works with a hack. It's not officially supported.

It wont add all 3 cards as you think. Either it works with your internal Graphics Card D700 or Nvidia eGPU card you choose.

Thank you for the info.
So is there any way to speed up Resolve on Mac Pro 2013 "trashcan" with eGPU?

My opinion (based on reviews on the web) is no, it does not work well. The Trashcan is crippled in a lot of ways.

You can kind of limp by with it to a point, but expansion to more (or better) GPUs is not really an option with a self-contained system like this.

BMD has a Resolve announcement for Thursday March 2, and NAB is coming up in April, so let's see if things change. There's always hope that Apple will come to their senses and make a big expandable desktop Mac. (And monkeys may fly out of my butt -- you never know.)

Here's some useful information Darek:
http://barefeats.com/nmp2013node.html

Honestly it doesn't make much sense at all.
If you need a faster render machine than the nMP, you need to buy a WIN or Linux based workstation.

You can get along with 2-3k bucks for a self build basic machine with 6 cores and a GTX1080.
If you take 5-6k you can even built a high perfomance system.

I'm doing something similar at the moment.
I invest approx. 5k bucks for a new dual boot machine being built by an IT guy living here.
It will boot with OS X and WIN... :o

I keep my fingers crossed for BM developing Resolve into mix GPUs usage. Tomorrow may be interesting day.

I can't switch to Win but hardly get any hope left for Apple updating MacPro line.

That's why I went the dual boot Hackintosh/WIN machine.
It will let me use OS X as long as possible but also using the hardware for a Win ecosystem.
