Sure, there are even two ways :)

1. Buy a license for Davinci Resolve Studio which includes support for h.264

2. Transcode your videos to a suitable codec like DnxHD or Prores. You may use ffmpeg for that:

Code: Select all
ffmpeg -i "in-filename" -vcodec prores -profile:v 3 -c:a pcm_s16le "out-filename.mov"

Hope, that helps.

Well, that's what I did as well. It's a no-brainer if you look at the price. And it makes a lot of stuff easier.

Btw off-topic. Are you from a british part of Colombia or are you from the province British Columbia in Canada? Just had to ask because your location confused me a bit :)

Just installed successfully on Ubuntu 16.04 LTS.

Attempting to view a Background node in the Fusion tab was crashing the application until I added a symbolic link from /usr/lib64 to /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu using the following command in Terminal:

ln -s /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu /usr/lib64

The instructions for the above I found outlined in another thread on this forum that I cannot post without the appropriate permissions.

Do you still need a dongle for the studio version? It's the only thing that have stopped me from buying the past couple of years.

I finished a project today but had some problems with the audio of the rendered file. I rendered it out with these settings:
Format: QuickTime
Codec: DNxHD
Type: 1080p 145/120/115 8-bit
☑ Network Optimized
Frame rate: 25

Audio
Codec: Linear PCM
Bit Depth: 16
Output Track 1: Main 1 (Stereo)

When I right click the file and go to Properties > Video, it says under Audio:
Codec: N/A
Channels: 0 Channels
Sample rate: 0Hz
Bitrate: N/A

When I play the file in mpv, there's no audio. When I play it in vlc there's audio, but it's not very consistent, like it sounds like it's struggling with the playback of the audio.

Can it be that the project has both flac and wav in it? I'm wondering this because when I tried to render out just the first few seconds which only has the flac audio, it worked fine.

I guess I'll test more tomorrow unless someone knows what the issue is.

I ended up exporting the project and importing it on my old windows laptop so I could render it out from there, but I've planned to sell that machine a in a few weeks. It's time to go Linux 100%!

No dongle required for the Studio version on Linux. You can use a license key, but it requires Internet access.

I don’t have an Advanced Panel, but I think the Advanced Panel dongle is still what gets you ProRes rendering on Linux.

I was actually just wondering the same thing as I was going through the exercises that are in "The Definitive Guide to Davinci Resolve" and I just came to the section about recording a V.O in Fairlight.

Couldn't get it to recognise my Blue Snowball. Like you, just a pair of Alsa inputs that did nothing.

I'd be interested in knowing an answer, but honestly it's not a deal breaker for me. Audio out works fine, and I rarely would have any need for recording at my desk. All my recording is through a Tascam or through OBS. Other than this practice exercise in the book, I can't think of a use-case where I would ever need to directly record into Resolve.

But I'd still like to know the answer.

But the studio version support mp4, right?
Where's the best place to buy the studio version?

Studio does support MP4, but does not support AAC audio that may be found in such files. In the Support section of the site, if you go to the Resolve/Fusion portion there will be a supported codecs PDF for Resolve 15. Everything in there is what Studio supports.

For purchasing, I used Motion Media for my Fusion dongle, and had a pretty good experience. I believe they also sell Resolve.

Cheers,

Re: DaVinci Resolve on Linux - Install issues

PostFri Dec 07, 2018 2:41 am

So I finally built a new machine :D
Went on to install Ubuntu 18.10 then ROCm and then DaVinci Resolve Lite. Amazingly everything just seemed to work!
This is the first time it actually passed the splash screen for me! I tested on 18.04 and 18.10 with AMDGPU-PRO and then repeated installations but used ROCm. It just works, except when it comes to exporting.

I did a limited qa testing since this is my first time actually getting Resolve to run and currently the only problem seems to be a pretty big one. I cannot export to any format except MPEG4 and this is important since I'm looking to buy BMPCC4K.

Naturally, I used the BMPCC4K sample footage "Close Up Night" to test exporting with and without any editing.

For exporting as MPEG4 it works beautifully but as soon as I try DNxHD, DNxHR or any other format it freezes as soon as I click start render and then after follows up with a crash. Sometimes it crashes right away and sometimes after a minute or so.

So guys, can anyone help me out at least by telling me what to test for and how to test it? Also is this an expected behavior on Linux and we're just stuck to only exporting to MPEG4?

P.S. if anyone works with Canon 77D, GH5 or Inspire 1 footage please share your ffmpeg scripts and describe me/us your workflow. I don't have it in me to spend yet another night finding and exploring all solutions for that to end up with a wrong one in the end  . It would be such a help to at least get me started faster.

DNx rendering isn't currently supported on Threadripper/Ryzen CPUs, on Linux.

Hi Dwaine
Thank you for official clarification

I spent some time error checking my Threadripper/Linux install before I found info about this on the Forum
It worked on a Xeon/Linux with same install, your software has DNx as default!!!

Would save us all a lot of time, as another thread said, if you explained at least in the docs for Linux install what you know won't work on in this case AMD HW!
---
So my question of course is, when will 'currently' end and DNx will work on Threadripper? :)

This is now a bit confusing.

In this thread people say it works: viewtopic.php?f=21&t=81448&p=451953&hilit=threadripper+linux#p451953

It would be even better if BMD would come out and say something like "This is a bug, we intend to remedy at some time in the future." or "We don't intend to support this with this OS on that HW.". So people don't spend thousands on HW that won't work.

Yes we do use CentOS 7.

If DNx works on AMD/RHEL, it's likely some hardcoded path.

If so, the official answer is likely to be, "use CentOS."

Hey there, yesterday i've got an RX570 to "resolve" driver issues with Nvidia.
Since then i am unable to start Resolve on Linux anymore.
I tried to cleanup the old Nvidia stuff and just added what's needed for AMD (i hope).
At least everything i tried except Resolve is running wonderful.

For OpenCL i installed opencl-amd as i did not try amdgpu-pro yet.
OpenCL userspace driver as provided in the amdgpu-pro driver stack. This package is intended to work along with the free amdgpu stack.

Well, exchanging a Nvidia card with AMD is really not the best idea. AMD just sucks in Linux - at least that's what I learned (the hard way). I also use a GTX1060 and it works perfectly with Resolve. Just install the right driver and everything works fine. At least in LinuxMint.

I tried AMD in the past but always had problems due to bad driver software. If I had to choose between AMD and Nvidia I would always prefer Nvidia. I'd recommend you to try again with your Nvidia card and CUDA.

My issues (on Linux) did not (only) affect Resolve (except for example whole displayserver freezes when i was attempting to edit videos, so i booted Windows to be safe, i got flickering colors all over the place and stripes in certain colors too, it was terrible, and yes, it may have something to do with the nvidia driver plus the display i use.
I am not sure what you mean with the right driver, i am only aware of nvidia or nvidia-dkms i could use... however, everything except Resolve now works wonderful with the AMD card ... would be nice to get the Resolve issue resolved without keeping the Nvidia card.

...by the way this card even worked out of the box (i guess due this) without any additional driver, including gaming, where the card performed better than on Windows - i only installed the (free) amdgpu driver in the hope to get Resolve running - try that with nvidia...

Hi Milan

Milan Ihl wrote:I am not sure what you mean with the right driver, i am only aware of nvidia or nvidia-dkms i could use...

I am using the graphics-driver PPA where I can get the latest drivers (see my signature). Never ever had any problems with it.

...by the way this card even worked out of the box

Yes, because of the Open-Source driver. Which is ok but not enough for Resolve and other GPU-heavy software.

i only installed the (free) amdgpu driver in the hope to get Resolve running - try that with nvidia...

I don't have to - thanks to the PPA installing the latest drivers was a matter of a mouse click. There is also the free noveau driver for Nvidia cards but that one is even worse than AMD.

Anyway, what I learned over the last few years is that AMD (CPU and GPU) is the wrong choice if it comes to video editing, compositing and other heavy GPU usage. It might work but there will always be a few bumps on the way as you can read in various threads here on the forum.

Regarding your problem - it seems you must use the proprietary AMD driver to use OpenCL. Maybe another AMD user could give you his system details.

Edit:
I would love to built myself a nice Threadripper system, but it seems there are some problems with delivery codecs which are not supported by AMD hardware. Also I need CUDA, so Nvidia is my only choice here.

I know this doesn't belong here but just as a heads up to BMD, Adobe is taking a serious look into porting Premiere Pro to Linux and not just limited CentOS either.

To the users, lets hope this means BMD starts improving Resolve for Linux rapidly.

Yes, they are reaching out to popular Linux advocates, youtubers and journalists as they are reevaluating a potential porting effort in light of the recent events.
https://twitter.com/killyourfm/status/1073580142533009414

This was all put into motion when a lot of us were made aware that Adobe actually has a uservoice page where they take in user feedback, feature requests, bug reports etc. and community can voice their opinion and vote about it. Suffice to say, take a look for yourself at what happened next:
https://adobe-video.uservoice.com/forums/911233-premiere-pro

I think this is a big blow to BMD as they neglected general linux users and videographers and instead focused only in supporting enterprise. This lead to users jumping for the opportunity to seek help with Adobe.
Lets hope this news can revive BMD Linux efforts. I hope they can see from the Adobe feedback that there are a lot of videographers using Linux and willing to spend their money for it but they cannot rely on a software that is really hit or miss if it's gonna work or not for their work.

Also, one question. I'm about to preorder BMPCC4K, does the license for Resolve that comes with it support Linux version too or it's just Windows/MacOS license?

I am still not convinced Adobe will port anything to Linux, I just heard this too often.

And even if, and that's a big if, then they will be years behind BMD. Not to mention all the legal implications and not to forget the interconections between the different Adobe apps and file formats. I guess it would take Adobe years to port their software to Linux. And are people willing to pay a subscription? I don't think so.

I myself have found what I need in Resolve and fully concentrate on learning it and support BMD in developing their software further.

Don't get me wrong - it would be absolutely fantastic if Adobe software would be available as native Linux ports and it would definately give the Linux community a big boost in acceptance.

But it's not for me - I never was and I never will be a big fan of Adobe software.

Maybe I’m wrong about this, but my understanding is that Resolve is actually native to RHEL/CentOS, and originally it was used in the turnkey systems from da Vinci Systems, before the BMD acquisition.

When BMD acquired it, the business decision was to port the software to Mac and Windows as well, and let users put it on their own hardware, growing its popularity on those OSs that are easier to manage, out of the box.

The build for CentOS is still developed, but it’s geared toward those advanced users who want the stability of the OS, without licensing costs, and with the ability to tweak it however they want. It also supports the most powerful configurations, and can take advantage of the most GPUs, up to eight in a single workstation.

So, CentOS is not provided merely as an additional benefit to a few fringe Linux users. It’s meant to be the go-to choice for the largest enterprise post-production facilities.

I have a question guys.. has anyne managed to get an audio control surface to work with Resolve in Linux?

I know that, when it comes to grading, Resolve on Linux only works with the BMD panels, but I thought audio control surfaces are a different story.

I have the Behringer X Touch which is a USB class-compliant device. It is detected properly on the system, and I managed to use with Ardour and other audio programs on Linux, but I had no luck with Resolve. It doesn't detect it at all. And I am sure it works with Resolve because I tested it with the Windows version.

So, i use Davinci Resolve on my windows 10 laptop with intel HD 620, but yesterday i decided to install CentOS and Resolve alongside with it. However after speding about 10 hours (last time i used linux was about 7 years ago) and, i think? installing everything i needed, Davinci Resolve splash screen appeared only once and every time afterwards it just doesn`t start. I hear yours :'MD doesn`t support that hardware', but really? Intel advertised their QuickSync technology with Resolve. And what`s even worse - i installed free version of Fusion and it works like a charm compared to Windows and even h264 files work.

Hi David,

Withough knowing your hardware and what you have/haven’t installed it’s difficult to give you pointers. What happens when you run Resolve from a terminal?

From the very first post in this thread:
When Resolve doesn't start
1. Run resolve from a prompt (/opt/resolve/bin/resolve) and check the output for error messages
2. Make sure you have all required libraries installed. Run "ldd /opt/resolve/bin/resolve" and verify that there are no missing libraries (ldd should give no lines with "not found" in them)
3. Log files are located in /opt/resolve/logs/. Please check for clues. (ResolveDebug.txt & rollinglog.txt)
4. Post here and provide outputs from the above

I think its pretty well established that Resolve can't work with the integrated Intel GPUs to date. You need something with an NVIDIA or AMD GPU.
It would save everybody a lot of time if the Resolve installer would do a GPU hardware and driver check during install. It could give some report on whether resolve is likely to work this system, if there is a suitable GPU driver installed and what to do about it if there isn't. That might avert the necessity for half the posts on this forum.

I have a minor issue with resolve 15.2.2 startup on Linux.

I have an optimus Thinkpad P52 with Intel UHD 630 and Nvidia Quadro P2000. Verson 15Beta used to work when X server is run using Intel card and CUDA runs on Nvidia card. I can no longer run resolve this way with version 15.2.2.

When I start, the project manager opens fine. When I try to open any project or try to create a new project, the UI doesn't appear and resolve crashes.

folder with logs

When I run my X server on Nvidia card, resolve works fine.

Dear Friends,

Sorry for cross-posting with the CentOS thread, but please, just take a look at my current PC hardware listed in my signature, and tell me - a complete Linux newbie (who happens to have been working on Sun workstations under UNIX some 30 years ago) - whether it would or would not make sense to replace Windows 10 with CentOS linux.

Would I be able to take full advantage of my current hardware, or would I need to invest in anything which I don't currently have? Also, my idea is make this computer a 2 applications machine only:
- Resolve (with full current functionalities)
- Autodesk Moldflow (which happens to tun on CentOS flavor of Linux, as well).

It would be nice if I could make this machine dual bott with Windows, or at the very least if an utilityy exists in CentOS similar to Remore Desktop on Widdows, which would let me handle my Windows PC in the LAN.

Is this a viable idea? It crossed my mind right after I first saw how Windows 10 wastes the 2990WX 32-core computing power... I realize my question is naive at this stage, but depending on your answer whether it's worth it trying to change my idea into realty - I'd start diving deeper into the Linux specifics. TIA

Hi Piotr
I've seen your questions earlier when building your editing environment, been impressed

I have used Linux since Slackware - when you were happy to later on have 256 MB RAM, one decent CPU (hadn't heard about cores/multithreading), slow network and mechanical harddisks
At home only modem connection to internet, but still thanks to open source the same software as at work!

Later Redhat as production at work, complemented sometimes with CentOS to 'simplify :)' on temporary machine - and at home of course
I really like Linux!

My experience with Resolve on Linux now:
The CentOS install BMD supply is as several has stated 'a reference' but otherwise 'a lousy packaging of CentOS'
If you let it update via internet it will just collapse on next boot (so don't do it if you want to keep the 'reference environment' :)

It's has an old kernel and it doesn't support a lot of 'modern' HW
In my case problems with:
- A 10 Gbit ethernet card supplied with the MB for a Threadripper, didn't work at all, lots of log compaints all the time
- A NVME 1 TB disk mounted in the motherboard - at least it had a lot of logging complaints about it - didn't continue that branch of testing
- Positive!, my BMD Micro panel worked with Resolve!!!

My preferred Linux dist is Ubuntu Studio!
So nice and clean, all internal HW works
But BMD Micro Panel doesn't work with Resolve :(

You can download Ubuntu Studio and boot from an optical disk (my preferred since 'nothing' can modify it afterwards if it's closed) and on USB but Ihaven't tested that
When you boot, you can just run and evaluate and later choose to do an install, or install at once

My recommendation - just as Mike Rochefort recommended, install on a clean disk - don't complicate things with dual boot etc, just disconnect all of your other disks to make sure you can go back clean

And, thanks to Daniel Thufvesson fantastic work to repackage BMD install to a .deb package, that install is so clean, same with updates over previous version
Very clear instructions on his url
http://www.danieltufvesson.com/makeresolvedeb

Piotr, I think you like seeing your hardware run all threads close to 100% sometimes :)
I've only seen that when stressing ImageMagick with a lot of operations/multiple output on really big files at work before
On both my Dell Xeon and AMD Threadripper, both with 32 threads (in top, press '1' and you see all threads)
When running Daniels's script, all threads went close to 100%

Regarding Threadripper, list of codecs not supported is longer than on Intel - BMD has no warning when you install and default export format is Dnx...
If you don't change Dnx... to something else that export/render will just crash Resolve in a bad manner
---
I really look forward to Resolve with all functions on Ubuntu Studio - Please BMD!
You are so close to a fantastic and stable Linux product!

Best regards

I haven't had issues with Resolve on linux and different storage options. RAID and such systems are handled by the kernel and similar low level space, so to resolve it's just another directory on the filesystem, as long as it's mounted properly and your user has permissions to write in it (of course Linux has RAID support).

Hi Piotr and Victor

Only considering Ubuntu Studio (and to some extent the Centos BMD packaging) in this text
Both on an AMD Threadripper and an older Dell Xeon hw as described before

Regarding storage alternatives:
- You have raid in same machine via software
Means the OS is aware and CPU has to do the job

- You have raid in same machine via hw raid controller
OS sees raid as a 'single drive', this can be only hw, or include a memory cache, but as mentioned in links below, that hw cache is great for office use with many users/small files, when continuously feeding big video files to one user (editor/grader) the cache won't help much, just cost extra money

- You have external raid via local connection
USB is not up to really high speed, TB3 if dedicated is (if no other monitor/extras connected..., find the bottleneck before you buy if possible)
- You have external raid via network connection
High end is (was?) Fibre channel, if needed >1 card/connection in both ends - expensive
10 Gb ethernet is cheaper and more flexible in smaller installations

Look at these, I have them running fine with Ubuntu Studio:
INTEL ETHERNET CONV X550-T2 DUAL 10GB PCIE 3.0 LP
Gives you two 10 Gb channels!

QNAP QSW-1208-8C SWITCH 12 PORT UNMANAGED
Both 10 Mb ethernet cable and fibre

STARTECH M.2 SSD ADAPTER CARD 1X PCIE 2X SATA M.2
Cheap and supports one NVME card and two M2 SATA cards (but SATA requires direct cables to SATA controller)
Works great on the older Xeon machine I have, I only use the NVME socket

At work we have Redhat machines connected to enterprise SAN via nfs, other Redhat doing nfs mounts to those 'storage and processing hubs'
Seems nfs is one of the most reliable ways to share storage there is, and really good performance
---
I plan a 'stupid' and cheap Linux machine with 2x10 Gb ethernet and internal RAID just serving files via nfs, can be placed out of sight - feeding noise and some heat where it makes more sense than at my desk

---
Rotating disks still seems to have a role for long time storage off line
Recently had my first SSD failure, SSD like memory cards burn out after too many writes...

Unfortunately I do not know the exact version history, but

it worked, than I got some kernel/nvidia update
it stopped working,
than with a new resolve version it worked,
recently I had a bumblebee update,
it stopped working.

I switched back the nvidia-bumblebee version, but this did not help, unsure what the exact problem is

special, I run resolve via optirun.
as said, I had configs where it worked, currently it is not working, and this is frustrating.

I am not very tight bound to a video editor, its just hobby for rendering talks from our user group,
but from time to time I need this tool to 'just work' and I am tired of loosing so much time with this.
I like davinci resolve, would even by the studio version, but I need it to work.
Shall I continue give it a go, maybe on CentOS, or shall I switch to Ubuntu and lightworks

when it does not work, the info I get is not very helpful:

Code: Select all
optirun /opt/resolve/bin/resolve

any advice so for me that I can use davinci on my optimus notebook, or shall I look for alternatives?

My own personal experience would say Switch to Ubuntu and install DaVinci resolve via the makeresolvedeb file created by Daniel Tufvesson. There are a few steps after that to make sure it works properly in Ubuntu, but as long as those are taken care of, I've had zero issues through multiple updates to both the Linux Kernel and Nvidia drivers. I've noticed that after an Nvidia update it takes a minute or two to get past the Davinci Resolve 15 splash-screen the first time. But it's never failed or timed out.

1) Download Resolve Linux Setup script
2) Download makeresolvedeb
3) Unpack both to the same folder structure
4) In a terminal run dpkg --get-selections and make sure libssl1.0.0, ocl-icd-opencl-dev and fakeroot are present. If not, install them.
5) Follow the makeresolvedeb instructions to create the .deb file and let it do it's thing.
6) Install DaVinci Resolve
7) Install nvidia-cuda-toolkit
8) Sudo mkdir /usr/lib64
9) sudo ln -s /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libcuda.so /usr/lib64/libcuda.so

This has been absolutely rock solid for me. However...keep in mind that your mileage may vary since I do not use Bumblebee and it could very well be that that could be what's causing issues.

Sounds like a useful advice, thanks a lot Paul!
If there is a problem because of Bumblebee, Ubunut should make it easy to switch back and forth to and from nvidia, with logout/login required, but this is something I could live with.
So I will take this path and give MakeResolveDeb a go, thanks for mentioning this!

Hello,

I may need to install DaVinci Studio on Linux in the future. I only have the DaVinci Mini Panel, not the advanced one... and the dongle for the studio version.

So no ProRes export with this configuration?

Woud I need to buy another "special" dongle if I want to use it without the advanced panel? Is it sold separately?

Thanks.

Sorry for the positive news, but have been running Resolve 15.2.2 Studio over here in Manjaro Linux over the past few days just fine. Had just one (system-)crash but only because it didn't have swap enabled by default and I ran out of memory using fusion with multiple layers in 32 bit float ACES EXR inside a 4K project (full feature film with a length of 96 minutes). After enabling swap it runs just fine. Framerates are more stable using Linux for whatever reason, was more like a rollercoaster ride in Windows 10.

Hardware:
Intel 8700K
32GB RAM
NVIDIA 1080Ti 11GB
Dualscreen LG 4K 27" IPS setup
M-Audio Micro DAC 24/192

Software:
Manjaro Linux Gnome
Davinci Resolve 15.2.2 (via AUR)
NVIDIA 425
Dispcalgui for calibration

Was expecting ProRes export to be available though but honestly EXR and DNXHR have been working flawlessly for me over the past few months. Probably going to switch over to Linux entirely if it keeps working like that.

Right now ProRes encoding on Linux requires the dongle sold with the $30,000 Advanced Control Panel.

However, I suspect that, given that Apple recently licensed ProRes encoding to Adobe on Windows, for Premiere 13.0.2, we might hear some good news from BMD soon...

So if I find the "special" dongle separately, it may me possible?

EDIT : It seems to be the "orange dongle"

Yes, supposedly these sometimes go on sale on eBay, but it’s not clear to me why these would ever become available separately from the Advanced Control Panels. Hard to envision a situation in which someone with an Advanced Control Panel doesn’t want the Studio version anymore.

So, here is a bug report.
I ran into an issue whenever I use anything related to Fusion in DaVinci Resolve 15.2.2 that I've installed using makeresolvedeb 15.2.2-1 on Ubuntu 18.10 with kernel 4.20 and AMD ROCm driver.
The same happens with amdgpu-pro. The same happens on different kernels and the same happens on Ubuntu 16.04, Ubuntu 18.04 and Ubuntu 18.10.

Whenever I put any Fusion title or use any Fusion effect on the timeline in the edit pane Resolve crashes. I don't get any preview of the title or effect, the prerendering bar above it is red and it does not turn blue at all nor it renders the effect, that part stays black in the preview.

Steps to reproduce:
1. Launch DaVinci Resolve
2. Create new "Untitled Project"
3. Drag any Fusion title on the timeline like Text+
4. Position the timeline cursor anywhere before the title effect
5. Click play preview button
6. When the timeline cursor gets to the fusion title Resolve should crash, if not repeat step 4. and 5. a few times and it should crash but in any case, the title should not be visible or rendered in the preview as in my case

I've linked all the info because it wouldn't fit otherwise.

Can anyone provide more insight on why this is happening to me? Thank you all!

P.S. is there an official place to report bugs?

This is probably a known problem, try this: https://forum.blackmagicdesign.com/viewtopic.php?f=21&t=79680#p457528
Unfortunately BMD don't officially care about Linux bug reports unless there from their approved version of Centos 7.3.
