Ripple delete clip with "shift+delete" in Windows

PostMon Mar 13, 2017 6:11 pm

In Windows, Resolve sets backspace key for "delete clip" and shift+backspace for "ripple delete clip".
This is fine, but "also" delete key alone can do a ripple delete. This is very problematic.

I came from Premiere, where I am used to delete clips with delete key alone and sometimes I do the same in Resolve without notecing the ripple effect in timeline. It is a mess.

A ripple delete mistake is hard to find because it does not leaves a blank space in place.

I suggest that delete key should have the same effect that backspace, so shift+delete would be necessary to perform a ripple delete.

I've learned to avoid the delete key since I started using Resolve. But wouldn't mind if there was a user setting to change this behavior!

I'd much rather things stay as they as they are, backspace for delete and delete/shift-backspace for ripple delete is very intuitive, what's the point of different delete keys doing the exact same thing?

It's also they way FCP7 does things, which has been around for many years, so saying Resolve should do things a certain way just because Premiere does isn't much of an argument. So I suggest you just get used to the way Resolve does things, at most this should be optional.

In the meantime you can disable the delete key by going to Keyboard Mapping in project settings and mapping some function you'll never use to the delete key (make sure to save the keyboard mapping when you do this). For some reason pressing the delete key when it is mapped to something specific will result in neither it performing that function, nor deleting anything.

I can't find the delete key listed anywhere in the mappings.

Choose a function first, then press the delete key to assign it. Or you could RTFM, which is the best method that nobody uses!

I think this is a subject that affects Windows and Mac users in different ways.

+1 Hating DEL being 'Ripple Delete'

And if we could, I'd love a way to Disable Ripple Delete permanently, same as I was able to do in Edius.

It would make more sense to have the key with a backwards moving arrow printed on it (ie, the Backspace Key) be used for Ripple Delete, and the Del key being Delete Only.
