Cheap Alternative Control Panel for Resolve

PostFri Mar 24, 2017 5:18 am

I don't have the BMD panel but this $300 setup (hardware and software) has been doing the trick for me. Here is a demo of it for those who are interested and no budget for a panel yet.

Nice idea, but it's still a flat surface which doesn't help with developing muscle memory for fast access for your tools.

I'd rather look what Glenn did with the Akai APC-40. There's an extra thread here. His idea is based on a cheap hardware panel and a constant development of the mapping.
It's actually more intuitive than most other panels.

The flat surface needs a bit getting used to and I did mentioned that. I would like very much to use the Akai APC-40 with Glenn's mapping except it is only for the Mac and I am on Windows. Anything physical will be better for memory muscle. For most part I have become accustomed to the flat surface and it is better than just KB and mouse to date.

Definitely better than nothing. Even better is a tangent Ripple ($350) for balls and ring and tablet for the other panels.

I agree with Paul -- virtual panels ain't happening when you have to take your eyes off the button and watch the big monitor. But at least the virtual panel will let you turn two knobs at once, which is necessary for a lot of corrections.

I actualy did use the tangent software on the ipad before i build the akai config as was all i had. I used it with 2 ipads mostly each set at different screen somless switching needed, but never felt real.
Never looked back since i went the midi controller way, whcih i can make 100 % how i want it.
Only downside as mentioned is simultaneous control of 2 parameters, but in practice (but i am no pro grader so does not count for much) it never bothered me. A good combination is a ripple plus my controller, which my last customer bought.
Just for the parralel balls useage, but nothing else.

Hey guys, I am not contesting that the app is NOT a substitute for a true panel with physical balls and wheels. Definitely not for the pro graders which I am not. But if you just need something cheap especially if you already have some old tablet gather dust, it is not a bad deal at all. Cheap and usable with adequate features that you can't do with just the mouse and keyboard. Like Paul said, definitely better than nothing. Cheers.
