Better Transitions

I'm trying to improve my amateur editing skills by adding custom transitions to my videos. I've found a lot of people online offering traditional effects created in After Effects. I'm hoping I've missed obvious resources somewhere, but I'm having a really hard time finding good tutorials on how to import and use the anything other than the plain transitions offered in Resolve by default. I'm starting to wonder if it's because AE created effects aren't compatible. I haven't been able to figure out how to incorporate openFX either, though. If someone could point me in the direction of some tutorials that show how to install and use custom transitions, I would be very grateful. Thanks!

I'm only familiar with OFX installation for Sapphire plugins. You install the plugins like you'd install any other software and they become available in the transition palette as well as in the color page of Resolve.

.aep files are not compatible with Resolve. AE plugins are also not compatible with Resolve.

This is off topic but pro's generally use transitions sparingly.

I use to edit for a producer who claimed he hadn't even used a dissolve in years,

And he was doing high end projects.

Transitions aren't a substitute for good filmmaking.

And when I see an amateur youtube video with

A flashy opening or graphics just makes the video seem

Somehow lesser than a more tasteful but artfully done piece.

That being said I recently did a spoof reality show where I used

A blur dissolve from red giant.

There's a couple of BorisFX blur/dissolve and swish-pan/dissolve transitions I've used that are not really that flashy but arguably better than just a stock dissolve. I agree there's a ton of tacky ones, but editing (and FX plug-ins) are one of those things that critically hinge on good taste and restraint.

Well, I'm one of those lame amateur YouTube Minecraft players. But hey, we all have to start somewhere. Currently, I only use transitions when... well, when transitioning between major recording scenes/thoughts. Otherwise, I just jump cut - but because it's a screen capture with narration, it's usually pretty easy to make it fairly seamless. When I do transition, I just do a simple swipe.

I'm eager to learn more and better myself, though. I'm working on unifying my channel art and video style and had an idea to do the same with the transitions, but from what you say, it sounds like what I'm doing is best already. I'm not a fan of overproducing mediocre content either. Simple is best. So maybe I lost my way. Haha.

With all that unnecessary information out of the way, I've done more research since making this thread and it appears the After Effects transitions and motion graphics I've found aren't exactly compatible with Resolve and the workarounds aren't worth the time invested for these projects. But it makes me wonder if there's a Blackmagic equivalent to AE. For future reference, is there an effects program like AE that's friendly with Resolve?
