How much more efficient /effective will resolve be having this upgrade? Is it worth it?

Depends on your projects.

95% of the time, more than 32 GB won't have a positive impact with Resolve.

Opening more than one demanding program at the same time and running some smaller background tasks.

Imagine having bunch of RAW photographs open and ready for corrections. For example PS can be a memory hog for it's undo function.
Now that the cat #19 is out of the bag, test it as much as you can and use the subforum.

Having more RAM isn't like using a faster graphics card. You either have enough for your task, or you don't. Having faster RAM is a different story, of course.

I see, so it wouldn't really benefit resolve because we aren't multitasking - from what I understand you're saying. Correct me if I'm out to lunch. :)

Yes, as long as you're not running out now, it won't make a difference.

Open the activity monitor and keep an eye on it while you're running Resolve. If you are ever running low, then think about upgrading.

Response from Tyler @ blackmagic support - very clear, great support!

Hello,

You can only dedicate so much RAM to Resolve at a time the maximum you are allowed to dedicate is 12gb so you will not notice too much of a performance boost from 48 to 64.

All the Best,

I have set up a new system recently and decided to go for fast RAM instead of more. I have the RAM running at 3000MHz.

Just to be future proof, I installed 4x16GB, with 4 banks still being empty.

When I watch the RAM activity, it almost never went over the 32GB mark.
It does when I open Resolve and other RAM hungry apps at the same time.

If you're planning to use Fusion then more RAM would come in handy. Same goes for other VFX & CGI software. However, if you do everything inside Resolve then it sounds like there's no benefit unless you're running a lot of software simultaneously

Strange, i spoke with my computer tech building the system and he said that ram speed is set by the motherboard on a mac - maybe on a hackintosh is can be altered.

Excuse my ignorance.
Forgot that you were asking for 5.1 RAM. There's a 1333MHz limit..
