Resolve's Automatic Color Features to make the image POP!

PostThu Apr 27, 2017 8:34 pm

I'm a total newbie with Resolve, but have done video editing for years with VideoStudio. I'm attempting to learn what I can with Resolve, but there is one function in VideoStudio that I really liked and I'm wondering if something similar exists for Resolve.

That is, an Auto Color Correction feature for entire clips. I know there is an Auto Color option in Resolve that attempts to give the video a neutral color, but in VideoStudio this same option resulted in an image that really popped off the screen. For purists out there this probably is not appealing, but for simple family home videos that I create they are a great touch. Is there anything in Resolve that provides something similar to this? Not so much an auto function toward getting your video neutral, but an auto function that allows the image to "pop" more?

PS - I know most people use a sophisticated tool like Resolve to manually color grade each and every clip, but for someone like me, I'm not looking to perfect each clip. I'm just hoping for a feature that can save me time and provide a vivid looking final copy.

FCPx I belive has automatic color correction on import.

Resolve is a sophisticated professional tool that requires

At least some understanding of color and grading

And watching paid or free tutotials and or reading the manual.

There is an auto color feature and shot match but that's

Not really going to replace even a basic grade/understanding.

Resolve is not a consumer app.

It might be free, but it's not for home movies unless you're a DP or something. The simple answer is: don't use Resolve. Resolve is a deeply complex professional instrument, not a blunt tool. Reducing it to such a thing is not going to and should not ever happen. You'll have better luck using iMovie (or FCP X if you're advanced), Premiere Elements, Filmora, or any number of other non-pro apps.

If you're looking for a one-size-fits-all thing and you're reasonably comfortable with the technical side of editing you might look at something like FilmConvert.

But let's not get crazy in making Resolve something that it most definitely is not. :)

Or just use some ofx plugin and punch in something like Magic Bullet Looks? They have a variety of presets to make it "pop".

Or you could just learn how to color correct and turn the knobs.

There is a nice plug-in (FCP-X now, Resolve soon) that doesn't need much initiative: www.epicolor.film
