Dongle

PostFri Apr 28, 2017 7:42 am

I have used the studio version of Resolve for years and have been travelling the world with the dongle which I am always terrified of loosing or breaking, I read that Resolve will have a software key on the latest version replacing the dongle, would be nice if as a dongle owner you could replace with a software key.

Does anybody know if this will be offered?

I doubt it. The best option would probably be to sell your dongle and buy a licence key.

Blackmagic have said on this forum that existing dongle users will get a code for Studio when 14 is released.

Don't sell your dongle. BMD said in one of the post that they will upgrade dongle with the license key.

Unless you can use your license key on multiple workstation, its a bad deal compared to a dongle that you can put in any workstation laptop and continue your work. Or you travel and work on a remote site with you own dongle. I do not see a single good point on license versus dongle unless there is absolute clarity.

I hope they maintain both, which would be the absolute best option. So depeding on your needs / workflow you can get aither a dongle or a single license. I feel a license is more like a burner phone while a dongle is your proper subscription model phone.

A point of surety we need is that we can retrieve that same license key and reuse it if we ever need to rebuild our workstations, or if we ever change hardware.

The option may be yours: keep your dongle or replace with a license activation key. I don't know what BMD will offer but it would not surprise me that the license key will support a desktop/workstation and a laptop. Or the license may support any number of devices but only one active at a time (same as the dongle).

@BMD:

Please keep the dongle.
