Wrong aspect ratio in Davinci software monitors

PostFri May 05, 2017 7:26 pm

Hi there.
I am a new user in Da vinci resoive software and i beleive this will be the future for the editing process.
I coming from MC and premiere editing softwares.
Recently i record footage on a bm hyperdeck device.
The resolution was SD 720X576 with a 16:9 aspect ratio.
I know that the specified resolusion has 4:3 frame size by default.
How ever in premiere ie, if i go to clip attributes and change the resolution to pal 16:9 i get the right monitors size in the software user interface.
This is not happen in the Davinci resolve software.
I can get the right image in an external video monitor which is connected via a black magic intensity pro 4k pci card
I work on vesrion 14 beta
What am i doing wrong?

So you've got your project settings correct? Other than that in Project Settings - General - UI Settings - Resize Viewers Correct AR?

I've never heard of 720x576 aspect pixel sizing before. 720x540 is standard DV (depending on pixel size), and 854x480 for 16x9. In PAL, it's 788x576 for 4x3 and then 1024x576 for 16x9 PAL. You can always horizontally squeeze it anamorphically, but since this is 2017, I'd just uprez it to 16x9 HD.

Good ol' PAL, 720*576.
PAL DVD's used this resolution. It was the "high quality" PAL in DV and broadcast, giving a bit extra tolerance.

News to me! I've lived in an HD world for 17 years -- I try not to think about standard-def.

DV-PAL: was always 720x576 for 4:3 and 720x576 Anamorphic for 16:9.

Check pixel aspect ratio in source clip properties, video monitoring and timeline settings.

Thank you all for your replies.
However my problem is not the resolution.
I'm living in Greece and TV stations still broadcasting SD projects.
The thing is, that, if i have to edit an SD project with DA Vinci resolve, then i have to see footage in a 4:3 monitor in software's user interface.
Other softwares change the aspect ratio of the monitors as soon you change the AR format under the clip attributes menu.
All the settings are right.
Even i swap the AR (in clip attributes menu) between 4:3 and 16:9 formats, nothing change.
I'm starting to believe that maybe its a software bug.
I don't know if someone could try to do the same and inform me if he face the same issue.

Pixel aspect ratio would be the next thing I would check.

The first thing you need to do is figure out is if you are delivering 4:3 anamorphic or 4:3 letterbox. 16:9 is an illusion in the SD world.

If you are delivering 4:3 anamorphic the clip attributes should be set to PAL 16:9 and the timeline should be set to 720X576 PAL 16:9.

For letterbox the clip should be set to PAL 16:9 and the timeline should be set to 720X576 PAL 4:3.

Works fine on 12.5.5.

Good Luck
