Resolve + RED Helium : random render hangs

Hi,

Working with RED Helium footage, I've got some random problems with renders. I have to render DNxHD36 MXF proxies and H264 720p QT files from native RED RAW (most of the time 7K, but sometime 6K and under).
I work with IPP2 curves and LUTs.

I can't find a way to repeat the problem. It seems quite random. It looks like some kind of overload. Somedays big timelines go through, some other days not any timeline can handle the job correctly.

When I launch renders, either H264 or DNxHD, render hangs from time to time at some point. Never at the same moment but still after quite a while. Deliver playback stops, the render countdown starts to grow. When I wait long enough, a message pops up : "Timeout when waiting for frame [XXXXX] for recording, frame dropped".
I've limited render speed to 50fps. Still crashes. At a render speed of 25fps, it seems to hold on.

I can stop the render. Save project and quit Resolve. But then Resolve hangs and I have to force it to quit.

I'm using DaVinci Resolve 12.5.5.026. I've also tried with DaVinci Resolve 14 beta 3 : exactly the same random problem.
I'm running MacOS X Yosemite (10.10.5) on a Mac Pro (late 2013). Here are the hardware specs :
- Intel Xeon E5 8-core (3 Ghz)
- RAM DDR3 64Go ECC
- AMD FirePro D700 x2 (ROM revision : 113-C3861J-687 / gMux : 4.0.11 [3.2.8] / EFI : 01.0D.687)
- RED Rocket X (disabled in Resolve but under use for decompression)
- Promise Pegasus2 R8 RAID array (32 To)

And here is a link to Resolve log : https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B3U1Mh ... sp=sharing

Thanks a lot for support!

I would say it is above 4k and 12.5.5 problem. I had hands on 5k timeline a lot.

I had really similar hang happening to me but it seems much better in v14b3 now.

Thanks for your reply and feedback.

I'm beginning to think that Resolve doesn't handle the RED Rocket correctly. When I unplug it, render is slow (around 20FPS) but it doesn't stop.

Or maybe is it because the render is going slowly that it doesn't stop ? Because it does not overload anything ?

Difficult to say...

The MacPro with D700s has frequent thermal issues, please check for threads here in the forum.

I've run some tests about GPU temperatures.

At first, everything seemed to hang when the GPU core reached 75°C.
After that, I launched a GPU stress test prior to start render. So one of the two GPUs core was above 78°C. The render has gone on a long time with both GPUs core above 75°C before crashing...

So I'm not sure about a thermal cause of the problem.

I'll keep running some tests when I've got the time. Thanks for helping.

I just had an 8K Helium project last week and it was a bit of a nightmare to handle on a Trashcan Mac with dual D700s. I could get real-time playback at 1/8th good, but even then it got very sluggish at the end of a 15-minute timeline, using about 12-18 nodes per shot and no NR. I was able to render out to 4K at 5fps, no problem (after the machine really, really cooled off). In particular, the thumbnail refresh in the color page was murderously slow and annoying.

I'm not going to accept 8K Helium Raw files for future delivery and will only work with 4K transcodes. That is, unless the client is willing to pay for doing the work on a massive system with multiple CPUs and a much heftier CPU and extremely fast I/O. 4K ProRes, no problem.
