Resolve editing problems

PostTue May 30, 2017 12:11 am

I was considering changing part of our business to editing in Resolve instead of Premiere and Avid. I thought I'd test it first. I had a footage shot on an Ursa Mini and imported it into Resolve. I could not get the footage to play in real time (I'm on a MBP). Also the audio was doubling up. Seemed to have something to do with the Decklink and the internal computer output. I change the footage to be half res etc but it wouldn't play.

Gave up. Went to premiere and it played the footage as if it was 1080p proxies. Is there something I'm missing?

Macbook Pro 2.5GHz i7, 16GB, NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M 2048MB. Regardless of the computer specs, Premiere plays the same footage without a hiccup. This is stopping us from being able to use Resolve as an NLE.

Try Resolve 14, it's much more capable of real-time playback on underpowered systems than 12 for sure. Premiere works its magic a certain way, but there are pros and cons with that as well.

I have been using Resolve exclusively as an NLE for the past 2 years and personally I love the workflow and functionality, but for me a powerful machine has been key (I use a Hackintosh with a 980ti GPU).

On my aging MBP, Resolve 12 was unusable for anything but the most basic formats. Since I installed 14 I can actually do a bit of work on it too and use it on the field to review footage.

Have you used the Optimized Media function?

12.5 does require hefty hardware specs which is no longer the case with v14 (in beta) so I hear.

Incidentally, can someone explain to me why so many people are pushing the use of beta software in production environments? If I am working on a client's project the last thing I want is buggy software. Don't get me wrong I think DR 14 is awesome but I will not use it until it is finalized.

You are hitting the nail on the head there. "People" are pushing the beta... not the company. It is not advised to use these beta releases in a commercial environment.

In the first case, not all features are implemented or fully realized, especially in the case of Fairlight integration.

In the second case, although there are obviously enhancements in the new version, the previous version is a massively capable package that competent artists consider a useful tool - and a grade delivered by 14 will be indistinguishable from a grade delivered by 12.5 -- try it, sure... but overall this is a symptom of "next-itis" and pretty much a salivating bell-ringer thing that has really converted the world into consumers, rather than producers.

jPo, CSI (but looking forward to the bell to ring) pant, pant

You'd be shocked how many Youtube videos are out there treating DR 14 like it is a finished product. Imagine someone who never used DR before, tries the v14 beta and it crashes or is unstable because some genius on YouTube said he/she highly recommends version 14. This person will most likely never try it later when the final version is released.

I worked for a large global I.T. firm for years and know that no client of ours ever went live with a "beta" of anything we made.

Sorry for the late reply. I dont seem to get email notifications even though the 'notify me' checkbox is checked.

I was trying the editing in 14 for the reason that it has audio and color and looks like it would be good for the quick turnaround projects.

The difference seems to be that PPro has the controls under the record monitor that allows you to select 1/2, 1/4 etc. I tried to change the decode quality but it didn't make a difference.

Resolve is still not very efficient in it's use of hardware when compared to other editing software.
You need a fairly powerful computer to edit smoothly when using greater than HD resolutions.
Resolve 18.6.6 Mac OSX 14.4.1 Sonoma
Mac Studio Max 32GB
