Resolve 14 Rendering Issue

PostTue May 30, 2017 10:59 am

Hi All,

We just finished a project using RAW 4:1 4.6K footage from the Ursa Mini Pro on Resolve 12.5. We sent this to a grader, and he did the grading work on Resolve 14 Beta. I couldn't import the project he sent me back in Resolve 12.5 so I had to update. When I install 14 beta on my workstation, I can't seem to render the project. It kind of crashes when it reaches a part on the timeline where there is a clip using TNR at the first frame a smooth cut transition to another clip is hit. I get the "GPU Memory is Full" error. The project is on a 1920x1080 timeline.

Looking at the recommendations, my GPU is underpowered for working with the 4.6k footage (RADEON HD9750 3GB).

But before the grading was done I could render the smooth cut part in Resolve 12.5. I know the grader has added a lot of cc nodes, so that changes things.

I would like to know what GPU I should buy to avoid this problem in the future regardless of TNR applied, or the number of cc nodes used (I'm not looking for real time playback, just to be able to render anything I throw at it without giving me an error saying I just can't render it at all). It would be great if there is a way to render a project even if your memory is low or insufficient (be able to do it in computer's RAM, albeit terribly slow...). Currently we sent the updated project back to the grader to render, but this also introduces some workflow issues.

Kind regards,
Nick

Did some research; but still could use some advice. What would be best? 2x RX480 8GB or 1x GTX 1070 (with the possibility to add an extra GTX 1070 in te future if required)? Keeping into account that Resolve 14 has a new engine.

Is 8GB of VRAM enough to handle TNR 5 frames + smooth cut transition + ~9 CC Nodes, or do I need more?

Thanks! The GTX 1080 was on the long list. But I wonder what the real world difference in Resolve would be between the GTX 1070 and the 1080. Too bad I can't find benchmarks comparing the two in resolve.

I think I read somewhere that 14 only uses one GPU for rendering.
