Is Davinci Resolve 14b4 stable enough for production work?!

PostWed Jun 21, 2017 1:08 am

Hi,

I have currently 12.5.5 studio installed on a MSI laptop with 4k screen, 1080 Nvidia GPU & 16 GB RAM whre I'm editing a project. I am keen to try the 14b4. I mostly edit/grade Sony FS7 Slog 4k footage. I do this as a hobby (not paid job). My questions:
is the latest 14b4 stable enough for production?
Can I downgrade to 12.5.6 after upgrading to 14b4?

Probably should not use "stable" and "beta" in the same sentence.
And while you can downgrade back to v12, the v14 project database cannot be read by v12.

Very true I shouldn't have used two opposing words in this case :)

I thought it's up to beta 4 and should be good enough to do some work & to learn the new features hence I'll be on summer vacation.

Thanks guys for the replies. Appreciated :)

if you livelihood depends on it, you should never trust any software until you have thoroughly tested it on your hardware with your use cases.

I found it unstable enough to switch back to Premiere Pro until the final version of 14 is released.
My Biases:

You NEED training.
You NEED a desktop.
You NEED a calibrated (non-computer) display.

I'm using R14b4 on a personal project and tbh with the performance problems I wish I'd stuck with R12 - I'd not recommend using the current beta for production.

No, and no.

You can start thinking about this when it reaches RC (Release Candidate).
There are features in R14 that do not exist in Release 12 that makes it incompatible for back-sharing projects, but you will be looking at a re-install and database restore if you want to attempt to move forwards and backwards among the versions.

This might not be such a disadvantage if you are not trying to supply services to pay-customers.

Some of us feel that even when the official version is released, we'd rather wait until the .1 update before fully committing to it.

I used to live on the bleeding edge (and sometimes I still do), but when my livelihood depends on it, I prefer to take a more thoughtful approach.

My guess is that we'll see the official release of 14 sometime in late July or mid-August. It's great that Blackmagic has made the beta available to the public. I have it installed on my laptop where I can test out the new toys for fun and get used to some of the new functions, it's definitely nice to be able to do that. But on my work machine, it's 12.5 all the way!

I've found it stable on one machine, but not another. But definitely wouldn't trust ANY beta software on a professional income earning project.

For personal, it's up to you. Just make sure you are exporting regular XML's of your timeline/s so you can at least have some chance of salvaging your EDL's if something goes horribly wrong.

As mentioned above, it all depends on your hardware and drivers etc. On Linux, I had problems on some systems (one wouldn't start), while on another, it was incredibly stable.

Therefore I took the chance and edited a small 1.5min personal project, which went through flawlessly on my AMD stable system.

Then again, run tests before you commit.

I'm just doing short YouTube videos. Using the computer below I've not had any problems so far with 14b4.
