Footage not shown in color tab

PostWed Jul 12, 2017 6:29 pm

I researched this and I know that others had the same problem and I know that there are solutions suggested as:
- One should enable "Automatically match master timeline with media pool" at File > Project Settings > Color > Timeline Settings, BEFORE importing any footage.
- One has to manually create an edit timeline because that doesn't happen automatically anymore.

I did both and it just wont show up in the color tab. Media tab and Edit tab work just fine, only the color tab stays pure black.

Since other users had the same problem I don't think it's a Linux problem but if anyone cares, I'm on Linux Xubuntu 16 LTS running DaVinci 14 public beta.

I'm soon buying one of BMDs cameras (not sure yet which one), I already switched to Fusion for Comp and I have an eye on DaVinci for the longest time, so of course I would love to establish a workflow that ideally incorporates DaVinci to great extends.
So I would greatly appreciate if you could help me solve the problem. Maybe it's just a small setting I've missed.

Thanks in advance.

You do not need the auto timeline match to media pool in many workflows so try a new project with that off, add clips to your media pool, select some, all, then right click and select "generate timeline with selected clips.

Then we can look at the issue of black on the color page if it's still there.

I followed your instructions but there's still just a black canvas.
The thumbnail of the node works just fine and I can see adjustments on the clip are reflected in the thumbnail, just the viewer wont show anything.

If that matters: I'm working with various .r3d testfiles I downloaded. I haven't tried other formats so far, due to the sheer lack of having any.

Have you tried setting Project Settings - Master Project Settings - Video Monitoring - Video bit depth to 8 bits?

If so, it would be helpful to have Resolve logs and other details as mentioned here:

Hurray!
Yes, setting the monitor bit depth to 8 bits did the trick....but now I wonder.....what kind of workflow problems could this create, because I think there is a reason why one can choose between 8 and 10 bits.
Does that make the previewing in the timeline and color tab less accurate? Will it be noticable? What if I run into a production situation where I HAVE TO work with 10 bit monitoring or does such a situation not exist? If so, what is the 10 bit option there for?

I'm sorry, that's a lot of questions but maybe someone can shed some light.

This setting only affects the BMD video I/O device, if you have one. Do you?

OK, then setting this to 8 bit should not affect anything else you are doing.

I'm a bit puzzled myself as to why this setting should have such an effect without a BMD I/O device installed. But others have reported the same.

Perhaps someone from the development team might comment on that.

I too, am having this problem. I was in Project settings and thought why shouldn’t 10 bit be better than 8 bit.
Found this thread, went back and changed project settings/Video bit depth back to a bit but clip thumbnails and node images are still black. Saved and restarted Resolve – still black. Tried rebooting – still black.

Any ideas?

If the issue is with Red files, it's from installing macOS 10.13.2.

Deleted project. Started new project and added clips to timeline. Still getting black clip thumbnails and nodes. Double checked to make sure that Video was still set to 8 bit in project settings.

Not sure what to try next –

I am on 10.13.2 but these are BMPCC files. As far as I can tell everything else is working fine- I can edit, color correct and export- so if this is not an indication of something more major I can probably live with it until a bug fix comes- unless you can think of anything else I can try?

Is this only happening on the Edit page? If so, turn off scopes and see if that helps.

I am having the exact same issue on Resolve 15 B...
Been editing and re-editing this one project - then tried to split a clip where the lighting changes dramatically... so cut it at the light transition in order to grade each segment differently then use a cross dissolve to merge them... but on cutting the clip - in the color tab I cant see the clip, it does appear on the color tab timeline but I cant highlight it... if i rest the scrubber bar over it in the time line I can see the nodes but cannot access the clip itself... also funnily the next clip following is also blank, but I haven't dome anything to that one... it just doesn't show up.

I got around this by highlighting the clip I want to grade into two clips and opening in a new timeline doing the work then bringing it back into the main timeline...

This has wasted 4 hours of my time today... I know it must be me and I have touched a setting I shouldn't have, but I cant figure it out...
