New to Resolve thinking of making the switch

PostThu Jul 13, 2017 6:31 pm

I'm evaluating Resolve 14 (public beta) as a replacement for Premiere Pro CC on Windows 10. Using the AMD Ryzen 7 1700x at 3.79 GHz 32 GB of ram Nvida 1070 Graphis card 8 GB memory. I still little new at editing. I have a couple of questions.

1. The version I have is 14.0.0b.029 is this the latest beta?
2. I use different formats on the same timeline AVCHD 1920x1080 29.97 2560x1440 29.97 H.264 this is an MP4 from a cell phone and 1280x720 from my Canon G12 at 23.976 H.264. The dose the timeline handle multiple formats and what do suggest to set your project settings for this type of setup?
3. Do I need to upgrade to edit 4K? I will have 4K material but will output to 1080P.
4. How about FX plugins. Are programs like Red Giant and Boise compatible with Resolve?

The paid version, $299, will give you better performance esp. with H.264 files. And it can do "true" 4K, while the free version is limited to UHD.

That said, the free version is plenty powerful, feature rich and the most amazing deal!

As for Resolve vs Premiere. In terms of a color corrector, Resolve smokes Premiere. In terms of an NLE, Premiere is significantly better, but Resolve is no slouch. But as projects get more complicated, Resolve shows some significant drawbacks:

That said, it is certainly useable for many projects.

"But as projects get more complicated, Resolve shows some significant drawbacks:"

Could you give an example of the drawbacks?

Probably the most glaring that I've come across, I provided a link to in my reply above.

It severely limits trimming of multi-track video.

But is it deal killer? For many people it's certainly not.

Well, I just playing around with the app I just ran into a problem. The first project I created no problem. The second one I just created I imported some file and only the video imported but not the audio. What's up with that?

You should try out your workflows. BTW - the OFX integration is limited in the free version. Also - video from cell phones is often variable frame rate which is not handled well in Resolve. I don't think you have the latest version.
