Assuming you're using the current beta (you don't say), you'll notice a "DIM" button just above the timeline on the far right, which is intended to temporarily drop the volume, without actually altering levels. Unfortunately, it turns itself on in the beta, so you have to watch out for it.

Click it and the volume should return to normal.
