Using Fusion 8 for keying / Green Screen?

PostMon Jul 24, 2017 4:07 am

I've tried out the Ultrakeyer in Fusion and feel it is just that much better to work with than doing Green screen work in Resolve.

Is there a way to transfer the "keyed" video back from Fusion 8 and make the alpha channel work at once? So far, I've had no success with that

Why not just do the comp in Fusion? You need more information than just alpha to do the composite correctly.

I'd also appreciate an answer to the OP's question...

What type of file are you exporting from Fusion? What are the problems you are having in Resolve?

The type of file I export to fusion is a video clip, shot against a green screen.

I then right click the clip, and create a fusion connect clip, where I key out the green. Once rendered, and back to Fusion, I'll start working with the background contents, often synced to the sound (what the person is saying).

I typically end the keying in Fusion 8 by hitting "Render", and am curious wether there is any kind of option to render some sort of alpha that I can use in my editing in REsolve later.

ProRes 4444 can carry an alpha channel. On PC there are only image sequences.
No, an iGPU is not enough, and you can't use HEVC 10 bit 4:2:2 in the free version.

Hey, sorry if I'm not understanding correctly, but are you keying the green screen in Resolve, then sending it to Fusion? If so, I don’t think you can do that with a Fusion Connect clip. Maybe in the new beta, but I’m not sure. You would have to render it out with an alpha "manually".

If you are doing all the keying in Fusion, then round tripping back to Resolve, you just have to make sure you are choosing a Fusion Connect clip format that supports an alpha (Tiff, prores 4444, etc.) when you create the Connect clip, and it should round trip back with the transparency.

Hope that helps.

Is there a way to key-out the green-screen in fusion and then treat the result as a clip with alpha back in Resolve? I believe this is the OP's question. The render in Fusion would have to result in a clip with alpha...

I just did a quick test with two layers of video in Resolve (14b5). I sent the top layer to Fusion as an 8bit TIFF format and within Fusion I placed a simple elliptical mask on the video. Rendered it out and back in Resolve you can see that the mask comes through in the Render. So I tried the Ultra Keyer in Fusion instead of the elliptical mask. Again, I selected 8bit TIFF as the render format for the Fusion clip (because TIFF can carry an alpha channel) and it simply works as I imagine you would like it to work where the green screen is rendered as transparent so that what you get from Fusion can be placed over-top of a background clip in Resolve.

Another question : what makes the keyer in fusion better than resolve? I've gotten good keys
In resolve, but sometimes a little chatter in noisier footage.

This scares me!
I was THIS close to installing the latest beta of 14 (b6) but I'm scared of ending up with a broken database and not being able to go back to 12.5

Also, does anyone know if there will be a dongle for the final v14? I want to buy it, but dealing with hardware dongles is just a big no no.

It has been communicated quite a while ago that the final version will work without a dongle.
