Stills in gallery have lost all nodes

PostMon Jul 31, 2017 9:37 am

I have grabbed a number of stills in Resolve 14b6 and it works as expected, but when I shut down and come back the next day all the nodes in the still have gone and the preview image has turned black.

Has anyone else experienced this and knows of a fix?

Thanks

Grabbed a bunch of stills and restarted my Windows 10 laptop and the stills are still there with their node graphs.

Maybe you somehow lost connection to the drive location where the gallery folder is being stored?

Thanks Peter, the gallery is set to store on one of the internal drives, I saved some more last week and they were fine up until yesterday, but starting up today they have all reverted to black and lost the nodes.

Wow, that's pretty dodgy. BTW, have you looked at other projects?

Also, maybe post a log file, as that might help the BMD team determine what happened.

You do that by choosing Help... Create Diagnostic Log on Desktop.

Or you can launch C:\Program Files\Blackmagic Design\DaVinci Resolve\CaptureLogs.bat

Good luck. Also, do you have any Power Grades saved, and if so are you seeing the same behavior?

It sounds like the top drive listed in your preferences, media storage, is not a permanent drive, or the location set in project settings for stills is set to an incorrect drive and the link is being lost.

It's most odd indeed.

I have loaded an older project from v12.5 and 30+ stills in there are online. That project was on a database stored on a different internal drive (the OS drive). There were a couple of Powergrades which have never disappeared during testing. I'm going to create a new database with no users (which originally carried over from 12.5) and see if that helps.

The top/only drive is an internal one and in all the places to set 'drives' in the project settings have been set to this one too. If the new database doesn't work I'll upload a log.

Thanks for the suggestions.

OK so the new database idea hasn't worked out. I made 20+ stills and they stayed for a day then disappeared this morning, I also made a couple of powergrades and they are absolutely fine. Are powergrades stored in a different location to the stills?

If I create a diagnostic log where is the best place to send it?

Just an update...

This is still happening in the official release of Resolve 14, 2 out of 3 stills albums have lost all data, 1 still album has all the grades, totally random.

The powergrade albums have kept all stills for weeks thankfully!

same with me. Stills gone after a day or so. only black screens left. Many more things keep crashing Resolve. Don't think its a final release. Extremely buggy... But I still don't give up. lol

We still haven't been able to repo this but there are clearly enough reports to know there is something amiss. Can anyone see this on a new database with a new project?

I have the same problem in Resolve 14. Most (strange enough not all) of the stills in the gallery disappeared and have no connection anymore after closing a project and open it next day. A few stills can be seen though and still contain the information. The black stills don't have that information anymore. The gallery still location is on an internal disk. "Documents/DaVinci Resolve/.gallery". But in that specific map I can't find a map named "gallery". Quit annoying since I worked hard on all the nodes for an important project and most of it seems lost now.

I've been having this same exact problem since the 14 betas, and it just happened again with v14.0.1.008

Also, seems weird to me that the log files you have us output (~25MB) are too big to upload natively on this forum, forcing an extra step of doing dropbox etc.

This is a deal breaker for me the way I grade with Resolve. I'm having this issue across multiple systems. This is horrible.

At the office I grade on Resolve Studio from a local server. The Resolve database is on one server space and the footage is on another. I constantly loose all gallery stills when reopening projects. The work station is macOS.

At home on Windows 10 and Resolve Studio, my database is on an internal drive that is always connected to the system. But I always loose all gallery stills.

The thumbnails are black and when applied to a clip, it applies one black node.

Help!!! I work in broadcast and having to remake grades risks missing air deadlines. There may be a work flow workaround I could use, but I don't know it. Why is Resolve 14 broken?

I obviously don't know the cause of this problem, but I *think* it *might* be related to the fact that Working Flolders and the Capture folder are set in Project Settings but they are actually program level settings, AFAICT.

For example I just opened an upgraded database from 12.5. And when the database first opens, I get an error message saying that certain working folders can't be connected to. But those folders were never even created when the 12.5 project was made. Those folders were designated in last project that I had opened, so why is Resolve looking for them when I open this database?

Now I realize that Media Storage Locations in DaVinci Resolve... Preferences... System is a program level setting. But shouldn't that also be a project (or at least database) level setting as well?

There are a lot reasons, such as who "owns" the media, drive speed and space, or what computer I am working on, where I my want to change these settings from project to project or at least database to database.

It seems that having Resolve inherit these settings from the last opened instance of Resolve (and not from what was specified for that project) can cause a lot of problems. And *maybe* that's contributing to what you are seeing?

I used to have this issue with Resolve 12.1 and Windows 8. After I did a clean install of Windows 10 and upgraded to 12.5 (and I've checked out 14 also), this problem has vanished. I never did figure out where the issue was... But it did drive me nuts :)

Similar here..

I make stills, can see them in the respective .gallery folder, and when I quit out of Resolve the stills disappear, visibly, on cue.

I am on:

Resolve 12 Lite 12.3.2.008
Win7 6.1.7601
i7-3930K CPU
64GIG RAM
Geforce 1080ti Driver version 22.21.13.8205

My scratch drive is a NAS bay, 110tb free, full permissions set to my user, and the .DPX file writes to the disk just fine and dandy. Until Resolve is closed and they vanish along with one of two XML files. We have full-time IT staff at the television studio where I am troubleshooting this issue from and they are saying the issue is with Resolve - otherwise there would be permissions issues and write errors.

I will post updates if there are any.

Unfortunately I don't have the option to upgrade Windows as this PC is the property of WBTV, but I have purchased Resolve 14 Studio for my home workstation and will install it on Win10 there.

this is very annoying. I keep my look versions in the gallery but during the work i lose all my stills after autosave. I don't wanna use live save because it doesn't ask if save or not when quiting.

It's not about windows version, I have Sierra 10.12.6 and Resolve studio 14.1.1.

Same here. After start DR 14.1.1 next day for continue to work all stills lost and turn to black. No idea why this happens.

But i remember the same issue on 12.5.x one year ago:(https://forum.blackmagicdesign.com/viewtopic.php?f=21&t=48966)

One thing that would help track problems like these down would be to display the filenames and path of the selected still when right clicking the still and choosing Properties.

Ok, that's now really very very annoying and disconcerting: all stills turn black while working on.

Is there some info from BM about that new old issue? Please?!

UPDATE:

We tryout: Open and work in a project, save some stills and close the project. Reopen it the stills are ok. If we save a new stills the old stills going black instantly.

After some test's it seems that:
- Resolve generates random gallery folders for the same project on the drive while working
- new stills kill the old
- a second Still folder kills the first one

I'm having the same issue here. I have lost all stills in all projects, being them saved in the albums or not.
Thumbnail Properties displays the Created date and says_From unknown source. Only new Stills appears, and for sure they are going to disappear too because it has been happening for the last three days.

DR 14.2.1.1.007 and the previous the version.

Is there any new workaround for this?

Any updates on this? I'm having the same issue - this started happening on a recent project after I opened an auto saved "backup" project. I went back to original project in the end, but all the stills are black. Made new stills, and opened resolve again today, all the new ones are black as well.

My still gallery is set to a local permanent drive, so that doesn't change.

Just had it happen to me today as I was working on said projet. I'm using resolve 14.3 and it's only been 5 days since I've updated from 12.5

Can't believe it. Those stills went black and pouf, all the nodes inside are simply gone. No way to relink to the stills and I know they are stored internally in my SSD, which is where my OS X is so... yeah, it's not 'cause the hard disk disconnected.

Sad stuff, this new update was working pretty well till now.

The node grades are still alive. Just re-save them as PowerGrades. To avoid making a mess in the Gallery, try to make a PowerGrade album per scene or shot as your convenient. Meanwhile, luckily for us, there is this workaround.
Time flies, if I remember well the first appearance of this was back in July 2017.

Four facts have been proved:
it's not related to disk allocation
It's not related to Windows or MacOS only
It's still present in DR 14.3.x
There is the workaround mentioned above.
