Texture/noise when using LUT

PostFri Aug 18, 2017 8:28 pm

Hello,

I'm new to DaVinci Resolve and LUTs in general, so please excuse the newbie question.

I've noticed that when I apply a LUT, it often adds a considerable amount of grain/noise.

For example, check out this render (24p from BMCC) and take a look at the texture of the brown wall:

Now compare it to the this render, which applied an Impulz Fuji Pro 400 FPR LUT:

I noticed this happens with all the Impulz LUTs, but haven't been able to test other LUTs because I've somehow managed to lose them when I installed the Impulz LUTs (Resolve can't find them).

Is that type of noise common with some LUTs?

Thank you,
Marko

It's not the LUT adding the noise, it is lifting inherent noise into visibility.

Try do get a similar grade by hand and you'll see it too.
Now that the cat #19 is out of the bag, test it as much as you can and use the subforum.

You can also try to achieve the same look without the LUT and see what happens. Noise is often a question of contrast and the specific gamma curve used in the material, so it may be unavoidable at some stage. It does help to use the Offset control and balance Log footage at an early stage in the signal chain to compensate for what you do later on.
